Bottle. Stinky, light cat piss nose with some interesting citrus, lemon flower nose. Cloudy orange/amber color. Light, slightly rough citrus flavors with moderate bittering. Thin body. Very pleasant. A bit light bodied for the style.

2012 Christmas tasting. Pale with a thin skiff. Big dry hopped scent. Big dry hop flavour. Lite citrus builds in the finish, with a bit of melon.

Draft to pint glass Cat piss, cirrus and grapefruit. Transparent yellow with little effervescence and practically no head. Classic Simcoe cat piss taste which I just can't get past.

Draft - Nice sweet citrus hops. Clear gold with a decent white head. Big burst of citrus hops, with a good amount of bitterness to follow up. Finishes clean and refreshing. Glad to find a great session APA in Japan, just wish I found it more often.

PotjeBier (1419) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - NOV 1, 2013
12 oz. bottle, courtesy of TimE. Golden color, a bit hazy. White head, not much. Aroma’s: citrus, hints of lychee, a bit vegetables. Retronasal it’s very hoppy, a little earthy, slightly sweet. Flavor is moderate bitter with hints of fruity acidity. Light bodied. Long, rather bitter finish, but not harsh. Nice APA, but no idea why it’s called African.

Draught at Bungalow. Pale muddy gold, puffy uneven head. Lot of fruity hops in the nose. Lovely mouthfeel- lively but not too much so, and with a nice finish. Flavours are a real fruit salad- I tasted grapefruit, melon, orange and some lemon. Bitterness nicely done. A real class act.

Bottle at home London - big thanks to Tim for trading me this one! Pours cloudy yellow-gold with a large, frothy pure white head. Lots of juicy citrus on the nose, some lychee or something, mild pee and grapefruit. Light to medium sweet flavor with lightly bready pale malts, delicate cat pee, more grapefruit, lemon, some tangerine. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Well balanced on the finish with further bready pale malts, grapefruit, mandarin orange, hints of pine needles. Lovely beer. Effortlessly drinkable.

Very hoppy nose. Flavors of citrus, flowers with a fruity bitter aftertaste. Makes me feel closer to the West Coast rather than Africa, but anyway a great craft job!

My Bottom Line:
This APA’s gorgeous hop profile spans from citrus to leaves to flowers, sculpting a starkly-hopped but very refreshing example of style.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the cloudy blond.
-The finish is resinous with a lingering citrus presence.
-Malts offer straw, but mostly support the relentless hop waves.
-Carbonation is soft and feels natural.
-Given to me blind, I would have guessed this came from a Vermont brewer (Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, Lawson’s Finest, etc.).

On tap at their Teppa Room, and at Shinshu Osake Mura (Tokyo).

Bottle at Shinshu Osake Mura. RBJG#2 Pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Medium bitterness with a light sweetness. Quite hoppy with aromas of pine and resin. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Dry finish.
