3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is by far the best beer I’ve had had from Shiga Kogen. They used to be a bit hit and miss, but this is really getting me going. Awesome aroma that follows with a smooth tasty brew. There is some wheat, but don’t be expecting a wheat beer here, this is definitely an IPA. This is worth seeking out, and in my opinion sits in my top five Japanese brews.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Ushitora. Hazy light gold with a small white head. Lemon, white grapefruit, coriander, white pepper with some crackery notes on the nose. Taste is soft and minerally with some light graininess (wheat I’m guessing) with some nice pith-like bitterness that stands out. The pepper and coriander shine on the finish. Not overbearing at all and very refreshing.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On keg at Ushi Tora. Label on the menu was ’Even Prime 2013’. In the glass it’s hazy gold, with a medium white head. Noe is quite subtle. Citrous lemon and light grapefruit, minerally, pine. Taste is creamy, weizen like and quite subtle, slight lactic creaminess, lemon citrous.

Tap at Craft Heads, Tokyo.
Hazy orange color, small white head. Spicey, citrusy aroma. Medium-bodied. Citrus, gooseberries, coriander-like spices. Nice wheat ipa although not my favourite style.

vegetale hoppy nose. Light body, dry well balanced. Very easy to drink. Crisp. Hops are in the nose but not in the finish. Highly quaffable. Excellent.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at the Craft Beer Festa Kyoto 2013. Nice fresh whiffs of lemony saison-like notes, great stinky hops. Cloudy unfiltered honeyish color. Deep bittering from the start (dry-hopping?), wheaty notes, and goes to a good balance in mid palate. Hops reemerge right at the end. Very smooth palate. This done just right ... from the best brewery in Japan.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Wheat, starfruit and dry wood rise from this White IPA’s fluffy and quenching mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy sheet of foam stays atop the hazy blond.
-The citrus fruit character is very pleasant.
-The body is svelte and the result is quite quenching.
-Wheat flavors are nicely expressive ; this is not just a paler IPA...
-A better developed aroma and this becomes another world-class Shiga Kogen brew.
On tap at Craftheads, Tokyo.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUN 24, 2013 Aroma: very aromatic ruby grapefruit, a little peel, and cedary pepper.
Flavor: ruby grapefruit, hint of lemon, a blend of apricot and mango. Finishes with a long pepper flavor with soft but persistent bitterness.
Comment: No excess malt or harsh resinous hops here. Great balance.
Aroma: earthy, grapefruit, lemon, grainy malt, straw, spice-white pepper and coriander.
Flavor: like nose with grapefruit, grainy malt, wheat dominates, light spice. Finishes with a long-lasting moderate bitterness.
Comment: Good carbonation and balance. 40 pts.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
A bottle for 450 yen from Asahiya, 6.5%. Pours a slightly cloudy gold with a white head. Lemon or Yuzu aroma, mild spice & some bitterness. Hmm, the first time I’ve tasted bubblegum in a beer but it was fleeting. The fruitiness is nice and matches the hop bitterness well but the spicy aspect of a white beer is kind of rough. Worth trying but it is just ok.
