3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
[2214-20090605] Sample. Sweet maple sugar aroma has watery leaves and an odd floral note. Clear, bright orange body with a quick bubbly off-white head. Some floral maple bitter hops in the flavour. Medium body. Rough and interesting.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
In short: A highly drinkable full-bodied juicy IPA that is both nourishing and refreshing
How: From the bottle at Montreal Mondial de la Bière 2009
The look: Cloudy orange body topped by a very small beige head
In long: Nose has a fresh floral hops perfume quality fruity citrusy notes. Body is very full with soft cake malts giving the beer a muffin/bakery cake sensation. Soft honey and caramel. Smooth carbonation and round body. The hops have a fresh juicy citrus fruits flavour and provide a spot-on medium bitterness.
My rating for the 2007 version: 7-4-8-3-16 = 3.8
In short: A sweet IPA with not real personality
How: From the bottle at Montreal Mondial de la Bière 2009
The look: Cloudy dark blonde body topped by a an off-white ring of foam
In long: Light nose of citrusy, citric and foresty hops. Taste is very sweet (too sweet) with a honeyed pied crust flavour. Hops are not assertive enough to hold up to the sweet malt backbone. Pineapples, grapefruits and pine needles do not dry out the beer. Mild bitterness. Decent but a lot inferior to the 2007 version.
My rating for the 2008 version: 7-3-7-3-13 = 3.3
I drank both in the same day. Why is it that the 2007 felt like a fresh sparkling refreshing IPA while the 2008 felt like an old tired IPA? I will probably never know why. Nor will I ever know what fish smelled like before women went swimming.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 2007 Vintage @ Mondial de la Biere 2009
Appearance: snowy floaties on amber hazed base, mid lighter fine top.
Nose: Fresh , citric , grape , mango aromas , clan and refreshing.7+
Flavor/Palate : Mid bodied with slightly thinner sides. Straight clean hop character. Citric with good fresh mango fruity touch. I like that straight IPA approach. Neatly drinkable.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle @ Mondial 2009. 2007 version.
Aroma is a burst of orange hops, fine malt backing, a small custard head sits atop a golden/orange, (reminds me of the Golden Gate Bridge). Flavour is a lovely mix of orange and malt. Medium bodied, a marriage of ingredients, satisfying and resiny. Wonderful!

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2008: A good IPA with a creamy good bitterness, so I liked the mouthfeel. Grapefruit with lacing lines. Aggressively carbonated.
2007: Very malted, not as balanced as 2008 though fuller mouthfeel. Like 1.5 IPA not quite a DIPA.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2009-06-05. Orange headless body. (3+) Aroma is mild but pleasant, light hops have an interesting character to them, fruit somehow. (6+) Flavour is similar, pleasant bitterness, lightly resiny with mild notes of the same not quite fruity hops as in the aroma. Light alcohol in the finish. Average palate is smooth, lightly carbonated. Pretty decent, and rather interesting. Different hop profile than I am used to. 2007 Vintage, Bottle at Mondial 2009, Montreal

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2008 vintage, bottle, Mondial 2009. Amber. Aroma is resinous and piny hops. Some grapefruits also. Taste is very bitter all along. Finish is bitter with some hints of fruits. Carbonation is average. Leaves the mouth quite dry and bittered. Some residual sweetness but not much. Very good and well made but not outstanding.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
This hearty Double IPA showcases citrusy, floral hops as much as honeyed cereals, before letting resinous bitterness nearly take over the finish. Yet another classy and flavorful brew by Shiga Kogen.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam floats atop the misty light amber.
-The hop character is also quite spicy throughout.
-The mouthfeel was rather silky with its levelled dextrins and relaxed carbonation.
-I admit this was sweeter than I expected, but it still remained balanced from nose to aftertaste.
2008 vintage, from the bottle at the Mondial de la Bière.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 6, 2009 2008: Slightly cloudy yellow with a thin white head. Aoma is sugar, herbal and floral hops, citrus and malt. Flavor is well balanced with malt, pine, herbs and caramel. Medium to full body.
2007: Is sweeter than the 2008 with more alcohol, wood and smoke. Overall much better than the 2008 which was already very good. Rating for the 2007 would be: 8-3-8-4-17.
