awesome roasty malt backbone, full body with fairly aggressive hopping. Both the stout character and ipa character can really shine. Well balanced, dry and very enjoyable

Draught at CBM. Harvest version. Rich and syrupy, orange, weed, dark chocolate, hints of licorice, dry finish. Great balance, smooth and delicious brew.

Harvest Brew version bottled version from Tanakaya which uses freshly picked hops. Pours a deep coffee brown with a small, thin head that dissipates fairly quickly. Weed all over the nose. It smells like a blunt, wow. Seriously a marijuana bomb on the nose with some roasted malt and pine notes as well. Taste is more of the same, big, dank weed-like grassiness. A little wasabi and daikon pepperiness on the finish. Another excellent beer from Shiga Kogen.

Dark brown with a small head. Smells of roast and resiny pine hops. Sticky and slightly sweet. Pretty good.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Almost completely black with an off-white head. Aroma has smokey malts with some nice hops in the background. The initial smoky flavour really makes the pine hops pop out, very tasty!

Bottle. Murky black-brown, not much head. Dank nose of wet hay, dark chocolate and a hint of hops. Mouthfeel of a decent IPA. Loved the way the piney hops came through. Nice bit of smoke too. Alcohol just right. Liked this a lot.

12 ounce bottle from goodbeer.jp. Pours a dark mahogany color with a medium grey head. A rich nose of chocolate and dank hops. The flavor is earthy, some smoke, dark bitter chocolates, American hops, very dark rich. Unique and tasty.

Dark brown, hazy, tan head. Aroma of bready malt, light chocolate, piney-resiny hops. Flavor of dark bread crusts, an earthy, almost smoky character, followed by resiny hops. Nice interesting malt character and resiny hops. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Beer Republic, Yokohama - RBJG#2. Pitch black - offwhite head. Nice burned malts, lovely bitterness, smooth body, licorice, herbal hoppy notes, dry bitter finish.

My Bottom Line:
Leafy, pine-y hops take on a wasabi spiciness before roasted malts and earthy hop resins bitter up this well-structured, refreshing Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the blackness and its brown edges, lacing nicely.
-This is heavily-hopped yet never abrasive. Just pure aroma and flavor.
-Malts could offer a tad more chocolate to support the hops.
-Hops are also citrusy.
-This is another Shiga Kogen brew which, given to me blind, would have fooled me completely as to its origins. Tastes like Vermont all the way, to me.

On tap at their Teppa Room.

Draft. Dark brown color, thick tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of bright pine, grass, very nice! Taste is dark roasty coffee grounds. Good example of the style.
