COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed for Masaji Beer Project.

Imperial black IPA, draft at Ushitora. Thick floral hops in aroma and taste. Perfectly balanced sweetness and bitterness. Some dark roasted caramel notes with coffee and cream. Nice thick and long finish with remaining bitterness. Fresh dry hopping.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2014 3-10-2013 Aroma: tropical fruit, ripe orange, orange peel, lightly piney hop Flavor: grassy hop, ruby grapefruit, pineapple, orange and orange peel, and cedar. Fruit carries through on the finish. Comment: complex and outstanding. My favorite of the evening and one of the top Shiga Kogen beers. 12/2013 Draft at Kamikaze; Score: 4-8-5-8-17 = 42 Aroma: Hoppy, ruby grapefruit, passion fruit, pear, Belgian yeast, hint of ripe lemon. Palate: Very long finish Flavor: lemon, pear enveloped in rich, dark chocolate. Blueberry notes appear as well and passion fruit appears in the finish. Comment: 1/2014 Aroma: Floral, pine, but citrus (lemon and orange) dominates Palate: Flavor: Floral, orange, passion fruit with dominating chocolate flavors. As it warms soft, roasted coffee aromas appear. Finishes with bitter citrus/orange rind and bitter hop. Comment:

My Bottom Line:
Floral hop resins burst through leveled roasted and caramelized malts in this smooth, loquacious Imperial Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the brown-hued darkness.
-There is balance in the intensity.
-Citrus notes are found throughout as well.
-After being a while in Japan, this is one beer which stands out greatly. Such wonderful hoppiness ! Another beer that screams ‘Vermont’ or West Coast US.
-The mouthfeel is super smooth and effervescent. Surprisingly easy drinking for 9% abv.

Bottles.

Tap at Watering Hole, 06/29/2013. Pours brown, nearly black, thin creamy white head covering the surface, copious lacing. Aroma is tangerine, piney hops, chocolate, roasted malts. Taste is citrus, grapefruit hops, pulpy, smooth roasted malts, long bitter chocolate finish. Thick body. Killer black IPA, was really glad to have tried this one.

Handpump. Pretty much what i would expect from shiga. Pungent (though never too WC) Hops on the nose, backed by chocolate and vanilla. Smooth body. Chocolate, a little espresso and a big hop finish. Good drinking.

Draught at Beer Belly Higobashi. Deep, dark, yeast and malt with some extreme hops. Very dark brown, small tan head. Excellent balance right away / malt powers along, and then some good hop burn comes in. Black Sun stuff. Medium-heavy body. Some final burn, and then an exceptionally smooth and balanced finish. This was the last beer on a long night of many beer -- and it still made quite and impression. Very good.
