Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. I like the description of this so I wanted to try it. It pours a relatively clear dark brown color with an initially big head which disappears quickly. The aroma is that of burnt sugar, malt, and molasses, very sweet and dominant. The taste is similar, with strong notes of molasses, candied fruit (cherries?) and nuts. The brew finishes almost immediately, leaving some stickiness but very little aftertaste on the tongue. I like this one very much, and the only reason I don’t give it an even higher score is because there is no hop taste at all...just malt. Most of the reviewers say this is quite drinkable and I agree, though I don’t want a lot of it. Overall, a most interesting effort from Shiner!

I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"look is typical for a DB, maybe a touch lite. Aroma is pleasant malty sweetness, if also a bit light. flavor and feel are good enough as well. didn;t stand out enough to be sure it was a DB and not just any dark german lager, or in other words, a little lite. Sensing a theme here? A totally quafable beer thaT DOES NOTHING TO STAND OUT, GOOD OR BAD."

Rated on 6-10-2009 (Bottle) This beer forms a medium sized very fizzy tan head with a short retention, transparent amber body, virtually no lacing, and fast rising carbonation. The Aroma is caramel, bready malts, herbal and grassy hops, and hints of fruit. The Taste is sweet, caramel malts, hint of fruit, and has a short dry finish. The Palate is tingly, watery and thin. This beer is light bodied. Overall, this beer is easy to drink due to the thinness of the texture. For the style, this beer did not fully fit the bill.

Bottle:   Muddy caramel, moderate frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Nose of biscuity bread, soft whole wheat, minor caramel.   Quite a bit of caramel and toffee on the tongue.   Also some biscuity notes.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes rather easy, malty, some caramel, and a bit of biscuit mealiness.   For a Doppelbock its pretty tame, no dark pitted fruit or heavy breadiness.   Its not bad, but just seems a little weak, despite being flavorful in other ways.

A slightly less than average doppelbock. Dark brown in appearance, average head. Lacks the syrupy mouthfeel of better varieties, brown sugar is understated and malty.

Dark with plenty of carbonation without feeling fizzy. Aroma is not a good indicator for this brew. Flavor is dark caramel and chocolatey. Excellent after dinner on cold evening beer. The finish left me craving another and another. I should have stocked up when I had the chance.

Originally reviewed: 8/7/09. Poured this bottle into my pilsner glass. Pours a ruby-tinted tawny brown. Good-sized off-white head on top. Pretty good retention, but little lacing. Smells like caramel, bread, and hints of butterscotch. The mouth is a little thin and slick. Carbonation level seems to be on the low side. Kind of weak. The flavor is pretty average. Plenty of caramel sweetness and bready malts are there, but it’s just not that bold. I think the drinkability level is pretty high for this beer. As it is not offensive in any way, I could see myself having a few of these at a time. I enjoyed this much more than the regular Bock from these guys.

Shiner’s best beer but that is not saying a lot. I can’t be too hard on them since shiner bock is what got me into beer tasting

Well done for Shiner and a little more "umph" than most their other beers. Good amount of hops and a deep dark color.
