Simple things aren’t necessarily easy. In fact, when it comes to brewing, it’s tough to brew great beer with just a few ingredients. But fear not, at the little brewery in SHiner we know a thing or two about refining even the most challenging of old-world recipes. This Czech-style Pilsner is brewed with barley, hops, water, yeast and 101 years of brewing experience. Here’s to sticking to your roots and keeping things simple, PROSIT!

Bready notes with a spicy almost peppery hop character that stands out. Malt notes kind of take on a corn like character. No noticable diacetyl in the aroma or in the flavor. Off white head that laces as the beer goes down the glass. Deep golden color 7-8 SRM that is crystal clear. Bready flavor that again takes on a light corn like flavor they say all malt so I am assuming DMS. Crisp dryness with the spicy hop bitterness, pepper notes are light but noticable. Carbonation is a little high and adds to the crisp character. I would like to see a little more body for a Bo Pils for this beer, but I would not turn one down if offered.

The body has a bright yellow color which has good clarity and some visible carbonation. A tall bright white head sits on top and hangs on well. On the glass the head leaves decent lace patterns. It’s clean and light with pale biscuity malt and spicy floral hop notes. A clean and pale bready/biscuity malt lays down a good base for a tasty and delicate spicy/floral come through. The finish is clean and the palate is snappy and refreshing.

Rated on 7-26-2010 (Bottle) This beer forms a small creamy, smooth white head with a lengthy retention, transparent golden body, fast rising carbonation, and a good amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, crisp, grassy hops, sweet, and fruity. The taste is sweet, lightly bitter, malty, crisp, refreshing, and fruity. The palate is soft carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this beer is very easy to drink and is a session, lawnmower beer.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a lighter amber color with good clarity. It’s darker than I expect from a Czech pilsner, though. The head is a two finger white shade with crappy retention - seriously I’m watching it fade away to nothing as we speak. Still, it leaves patchy rings of lacing on the glass. S: About bang-on what I expect from the style, no more, no less - grassy hops, minimal maltiness, and a touch of diacetyl. Quite pleasant, though I kind of want a bit more hoppiness here. T: The maltiness provides a touch of caramel at first: while it’s a bit unbefitting of the style, it does help balance the mild hoppiness, along with the diacetyl note. I enjoy the touches of citrus I find in the flavor profile. Decent, but a bit lacking in flavor. M: This is ridiculously clean and bone dry, but then again, that’s what the style dictates. On the other hand, it’s a bit too ’big’ feeling on the back end - this makes it seem more substantial, but harms drinkability somewhat. Honestly, I could use a bit more carbonation. O: It’s alright. The weak flavor holds it back more than anything. To be fair, though, I like my Czech pilsners hopped to fuck and back, so I can’t hold it against this brew too much. Don’t think I’d buy it again (if it appeared in a 6-pack), though.
