A Bohemian Black Lager is a rare and delicious style of beer, referred to in Germany as "Schwarzbier". Shiner Bohemian Black Lager remains true to this old-world style by using imported Czech Saaz and Styrains Hops and select roasted malts to make it our darkest beer. First brewed to commemorate our 97th anniversary, this Bohemian Black Lager remains true to the old-world heritage of the German and Czech immigrants that settled Shiner. Prosit!

Bottle pours a nice dark brown, good malty characters, lighter body, no hop prescence. Its not too bad, not too complex but its the best brew by Shiner in my opinion.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2007 Wow, this one caught me off guard, as I wasnít expecting too much, but certainly this was above average within the style. The appearance was brown-black, very nice initial head, great retention, even a good bit of lacing. The aroma was a little strong on roasted coffee, but decent touches of licorice in there, light bubblegum (which I kinda like in this style). The flavor followed suit, again a little roastier than most schwarzbiers (slight ash aftertaste), but this finished crisp and dry. Mouthfeel was a little bit thinner than the best of this style, and it didnít have the grassy hop balance of kostritzer, but heck, I liked this anyway. Iíll return for sure at these prices. Cheers, Shiner!

Bottle Dark pour with small head but decent lacing. Light aroma of malts and a bit of fruit and chocolate. Same with the flavor. First couple seemed way overcarbonated, later ones seem very light carbonated. Still very thin. Good beer, but not excelent.

This schwarzbier pours a deep reddish black color from a 120z bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty, chocolate, fruit and caramel. A medium to light bodied schwarzbier. Malts are chocolate, caramel and sweet. Hops are herbal and earth. Lively carbonation. Not very roasty malts. Perhaps a touch thin. Crisp and clean. Not bad, but kind of falls into that generic dark beer category. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle bought in Wichita, KS... Irony!. Smells of acrid burning copper. Average dark tint appearance. Flavor is blunt roasted malt with a hickory smoke finish. Watery mouthfeel. I was expecting more, as I heard some good reviews; however, like most Texas brews, I was disappointed.

12oz bottle pours dark brown with a short tan head that stays pretty well and laces the sides of the glass. Aromas of chocolate, and roasted malts, some caramel, and a little raisins. Flavor is choclate, caramel, some roasted malts, and some smoke. Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. Actually not bad.. Better than expected for something that says Shiner on the label..

Very pleasantly surprised. Iíve had a lot of Shiner (the Texan wifeís favorite beer). The Shiner taste is very evident here. But the smoky malts, raisins, brown sugars really give this a nice taste.

I found this beer on sale for $2.99 and decided to give it a shot. In fact, it turned out to be pretty decent. Around 50 degrees, with a weak, off-white head, it had an extremely dark amber color and a decent mouthfeel. Disappointing, compared to Sam Adamsí Black Lager, of course, but not bad. Smokey, woody flavor with a little of what might be blackberry or raspberry, itís only worth picking up if youíve got a low opinion of black lagers or if you find it on sale.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of fine to medium sized light brown colored bubbles that were and left behind a semi-opaque typically carbonated dark ruby red brown colored body and a fair lacing. The thin aroma was malty and sweet. . The flavor contained notes of malt and sweet. A decent one but not one that I would consider buying again.

In a chilled mug: poured deep black with a smallish, tan head. Aroma dominated by malts and a slight sweet-sour undertone. Roast malts dominate, with a slightly dark chocolate bitter and a subtle sweet undertone lurking under the surface. It manages to stay very crisp and refreshing. Iím a bit puzzled by the pedestrian ratings I see here, because this beer was more than pleasant. Quite surprising. Kudos to Shiner. I guess there are some good things about Texas afterall.
