COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Bohemian Black Lager is a rare and delicious style of beer, referred to in Germany as "Schwarzbier". Shiner Bohemian Black Lager remains true to this old-world style by using imported Czech Saaz and Styrains Hops and select roasted malts to make it our darkest beer. First brewed to commemorate our 97th anniversary, this Bohemian Black Lager remains true to the old-world heritage of the German and Czech immigrants that settled Shiner. Prosit!

Pours a deep brown with some reddish hues coming through from the light. Aromas of roasted malts and some licorice. Taste is predominantly roasted malts and slight hop bitterness but nothing really stands out. Soft carbonation and watery finish. Not bad but nothing memorable.

Smells like coffee. Tastes like dark chocolate. Aftertaste reminds me of hot cocoa. But it's beer. Go figure. I'm not normally a fan of super-dark beers but I enjoy this as a novelty entree. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Bottle. Chocolate caramel malt aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Sweet light chocolate malt flavor. Not bad - pretty light though.

355 ml bottle from a publix in Kissimmee florida. Brown with a small tan head. Sweet molasses and grainy malt nose. Not as roasty as other examples of the style. This is fine but it’s to sweet to drink in quantity which makes it pretty useless as a session lager. One and done. FLVC2 #12

Pours almost black, with a short, thin tan head. Very slight smokiness...malt aroma. Taste is cola, roast, a little chocolate. A nice , pleasant taste and feel. Good.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark, but not black color with one finger of tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is slightly metallic with a light hint of toasted malt. Taste is sweet cocoa, a bit of a sour note, and ends with some of the same toasty flavor.

Black patent malt is clearly evident in this traditional porter style lager. It is very drinkable, but is probably better in mid November than early April. Being partial to darks, and very fond of porters, this black lager is rather nice if a bit thin on the palate.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2013 Bottle in a mixed six pack. Pour has an extremely dark brown color bordering on black and a thin coat of tan head. Aroma has lightly roasted dark malt, grains, and a touch of chocolate. Mouth feel is medium light and the carbonation medium low. Flavor again has darker malts, faint roast, a bit of bitterness, and some chocolate.

Pours a very dark brown with a small tan head. Subtle aroma of coffee, malt, chocolate. Flavor is of malt and coffee, with slight licorice and raisin flavors as well. Very smooth, but not a particularly flavorful beer. Refreshing.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a small tan head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is roasted malts, cocoa, light coffee and light hops. Light to medium body with a slick feel and average carbonation. Sweet malty roasted flavor with a mild hop profile and a lightly bitter dry finish. Not bad Spoetzl

Extremely dark brown, almost black in color with an off-white head, this Schwarzbier has the distinctive lager aroma, but with a very nice, highly roasted malt kick and a touch of caramel. It’s much like a thin porter in the mouth, much more satisfying than the aroma, with your run of the mill lager mouth feel and flavor with a strict roasted malt character to spice things up. This isn’t a very complex beer. It’s straightforward, easy to drink, and is a great (drinkable) alternative to the abundance of Texan lagers, especially from Shiner.
