3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 brewblackhole (1588) - Muskego, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 17, 2011 Aroma has a hint of that roasted anise type that this style sometimes has, almost root beer like, flavor is that slight root beer toasted taste the smallest amount of bitterness, its fine when you want to give the palate a hop break, not not one of the better in this style
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 roxtersoxter (130) - McKinney, Texas, USA - JUN 10, 2013
Pours dark brown with tan head out of bottle. Chocolate and coffee aroma. Chocolate taste but not as malty as I would like. Good beer from shiner but still want more from them.

Another fine member of the Shiner family of beers. Their attempt at a dark lager is spot on.

Smells like coffee. Tastes like dark chocolate. Aftertaste reminds me of hot cocoa. But it's beer. Go figure.
I'm not normally a fan of super-dark beers but I enjoy this as a novelty entree.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 matt7215 (1969) - Cambridge, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 8, 2013
355 ml bottle from a publix in Kissimmee florida. Brown with a small tan head. Sweet molasses and grainy malt nose. Not as roasty as other examples of the style. This is fine but it’s to sweet to drink in quantity which makes it pretty useless as a session lager. One and done. FLVC2 #12

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ed5388 (628) - Forked River, New Jersey, USA - APR 29, 2013
12oz bottle. Pours a dark, but not black color with one finger of tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is slightly metallic with a light hint of toasted malt. Taste is sweet cocoa, a bit of a sour note, and ends with some of the same toasty flavor.

Black patent malt is clearly evident in this traditional porter style lager. It is very drinkable, but is probably better in mid November than early April. Being partial to darks, and very fond of porters, this black lager is rather nice if a bit thin on the palate.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 blklab2007 (1639) - Connecticut, USA - APR 19, 2013
UPDATED: APR 20, 2013 Bottle in a mixed six pack. Pour has an extremely dark brown color bordering on black and a thin coat of tan head. Aroma has lightly roasted dark malt, grains, and a touch of chocolate. Mouth feel is medium light and the carbonation medium low. Flavor again has darker malts, faint roast, a bit of bitterness, and some chocolate.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Brain_Parasite (39) - California, USA - APR 7, 2013
Pours a very dark brown with a small tan head. Subtle aroma of coffee, malt, chocolate. Flavor is of malt and coffee, with slight licorice and raisin flavors as well. Very smooth, but not a particularly flavorful beer. Refreshing.
