COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Handcrafted from two special varieties of hops and a blend of rich imported malts to make this the darkest lager possible.

Grassy aroma. Honey colored pour. Nothing special going on tastewise. Slightly sour malts on the front end. Just a hint of hops in the finish.

Not a bad effort. Clear, dark brown body topped by a small beige head that leaves some scattered lace. Muted aroma has some dark toasted bread and spicy hops. Taste adds a note of faint chocolate to the dark bread and spicy hop. Unremarkable, but probably the best offering of the Spoetzl line.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2007 Nice packaging! The label is different from all the other shiner offerings and it is an upgrade in my opinion. The beer pours a deep gold into the glass with about an inch of white head that remains much longer than the head on other shiner beers. The aroma is quite nice with nice hopping much different from other shiners. (are you noticing a trend here?) The beer leaves a little more to be desired on the flavor end though as it is a little weaker than the aroma might suggest. Still, there are many nice aspects in the taste with a sweet malt backbone and some spicy hops. Overall a real nice beer from the Shiner camp. I like to see the anniversary offerings and hope they continue even after the 100th anniversary!

Orange color, paler than true amber, a big foamy head. Aroma is slight butterscotch, a hint of brown sugar, a touch of herbal hops, and perhaps a vague vegetal character. Palate is lighter than I’d like - right up front this beer lacks body. Just a touch of caramel malt sweetness - moves into a nice spicy hop finish though. I wouldn’t say its watery, but I do like more malt backbone to amber lagers. I think this could serve as a refreshing beer with flavor, when such is needed, though.

This is a nice change from regular Shiner, but has most of the same characteristics. Slight hoppy aroma, some earthy, vegetable characteristics. Flavor is mid-range, mostly malty, dry, and slightly bitter.

Bottle. Light copper color with a large white ehad. Nice metallic hops, really not too bad. A decent attempt, I would check on the catagory of this eer I would not consider it to be an ADL.

Pours a deep copper with a whitish head. Aroma is malty with a hint of spicy hops. Flavor is sweet caramel with some burnt notes. Medium bodied. Bitterness does linger a bit. Remids me of a watered down maerzen.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a small lasting off white head. Aromas of bread, carmel and light earthiness. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel, bread and light earthiness with a crisp malty finish.

(Bottle) Pours an amber color with little head. Aroma of biscuit and sweet caramel. Taste is basically sweet and malty. Medium palate and decent mouthfeel. Could be more balanced and complex, but still a pretty decent offering from Shiner.
