00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Feb 25, 2008 Something that I sessioned frequently on my trip to TX. Pours out a dark amber color with a nice head. aroma is rather malty with hints of caramel. Flavor was similar. Not bad. Beaver (587), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Feb 20, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear caramel amber with a fizzy off white head that quickly disappears.
The aroma is sweet metallic malts with some DMS.
The flavor is heavily sweet malts - caramel and toffee with a lilttle toastedness. The mouthfeel is medium and watery with a little sharp carbonation.
Overall, it’s not bad tasting (much more flavor than I expected), but overbalanced on the sweet side. It’s better than the macros.
FishManLA (284), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA Feb 20, 2008 A comptent brew. Always reminds me more of a pale ale than a lager. It has a "grittiness" (I pondered that word, I’ve concluded it’s the right one) to the taste that I can never decide if it’s a good or a bad attribute to the brew. kflorence (93), San Diego, California, USA Feb 17, 2008 Bottle, it was on sale at the grocery store and I hadn’t tried it yet, so I decided to give it a go. Poured the first one, not much head at all, smell was hoppy and metallic with some toasty notes in there as well. Although it is kind of dark in color, it is not a heavy beer and it’s very easy to drink. The flavor is sweet, toasted and nutty with some hop flavor as well. It’s really not bad, more than I expected, but it’s nothing special. It lacks the flavor that real bocks bring to the table and has nothing that makes it stand out, but it tastes pretty good and is light enough to be drinkable, so I can’t complain. tonedef (3), USA does not count Feb 15, 2008 this is a good beer. although not a traditional bock, it is one of my favorites. every variety of shiner i have tried have been great. travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Feb 14, 2008 Back before I started drinking craft beer this was my fall back beer. Now it has lost its luster with me. Amber to light brown in color with not too much of a head. Sort of sweetish taste with some hops there and the aroma. The other problem with this one is that people think this is real bock or this is dark beer it is sort of a people misleader. CharlesDarwin (1823), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA Feb 13, 2008 On tap at the McAllen Convention Center. Aroma is a glossy donut sugar glaze, bolstered with some mistletoe. Pours a middle brown with a rim of almond foam. Flavor is a pretty expectable light sweetness, generic in bread crust, mass produced candy bar, and brown sugar. Clean and with minerals. Hops glow out the back in a streak of green tea. Meh. As an American Dark Lager from Texas probably would be. dslunsford1 (55), Hampton, Virginia, USA Feb 12, 2008 Great beer! Comes from near where Lance Armstrong lives. Hoppy, but not overbearing. I really just like it cause Lance likes it.
