Golden amber with a noisy, short-lasting head. No lacing. Taste is of caramel malt and grain (corn?). Bitterness is due to carbonation. Shiner has been around since 1906 (see: "Great American Beer," p.88) as a traditional regional brewery for the general public. To compare it to the current crop of micros is unfair and unecessary. It is what it is, which is okay.

Drank from bottle at San Antonio Taco Company in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Amber color, thin off-white head. Some caramel malt flavor, but mass-produced corn adjuncts and metallic carbonation detract. Tasty, better than any macro American Light Lager. I like the name, the packaging, the story, but the actual beer isn’t that special. I always crave this beer with Tex-Mex, but I admit it’s mostly nostalgia.

Average beer, wasn’t really feeling it too much from a lager perspective, not bad if you are looking for an alternative to light beer, but does not really stand out.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2011 Pours deep amber with very little head. Aroma is sweet malt. Taste is sweet malt with bit of brown sugar on the finish. It’s just ok.

Pours a clear reddish brown w/ little head that dissipates immediately. Some caramel and grass arima. Aggressively carbonated w/ lt to med body. Somewhat smooth. Flavor is grain, some caramel. No hops and the finish is seltzer water. Drinkable session if need be. A step over macro lagers, but as acraft brew it lacks.

I’m fairly certain the goat on the label peed in the bottle. The guys I work with in TX swear by this, I think I’d rather have some good old fashion BMC over this.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2011 12oz bottle and on tap.
I used to drink this somewhat regularly before I realized that there are so many better beers out there. I also think the recipe has changed for this and not for the better. It seemed to have a lot more flavor and body - now it’d put it in the same group as most american macros. Corny and metallic. Bock? I think not.

Serving glass: Poured from draft into Pint glass.
Appearance: Dark but clear amber-brown without hardly any head or lacing.
Aroma: Cherry and dark fruit malts, some faint metallic hops.
Taste: Semi-sweet fruity malts, with some very light metallic hops at the end. Leaves a slight medicinal aftertaste.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, relatively light body. Finish is not dry enough.
Overall: An okay lager that is certainly not a bock.
