Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Dunkelweizen is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley. This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

Average slight off white head. Faint aroma w/ some complexities. Reddish-brown. Highly carbonated. The nose is odd like meat.. but there’s also malts and coffee. The taste is odd as well, a little too sweet and acidic, but the malts are caramel and there is a little hop bitterness. Very drinkable and would prob. go well with burgers and such. I was a little disappointed thou, as I remember last years being much more enjoyable with that banana & yeast quality that this completely lacks. Humm?

A deep amber colored body with decent carbonation and a mid sized white cap. Aroma of roasted malts and a little earthy. Taste of caramel and roasted malts but there was a metallic presence that spoils it. Overall its is an o.k. brew but not one i would try again. Shiners winter version of this beer is alot better than the regular dunkel it is brewed with pecans and peaches and that gives it a really nice taste. Even though there was still a metallic twinge to it I found it to be much more enjoyable. i would rate the winter version at 3.7. try the winter version if you can find it. I hope that the winter version is given its own review space since its revised seasonal flavors make it a different beer. Originally rated on 11/16/08

Not really a fan of this beer. Its sweetness isn’t so much rich or caramelly, as it is some sort of spicy fruit. Not that the flavor is all that compelling. Thankfully, this isn’t an incredibly powerful beer.

Really a decent try at a dunkelweizen, has a good wheat flavor to it, one of the better Shiner beers.

(Sample Date: 11/10/2010 Source:Other) Peaches and roasted nuts. Holiday Cheer. Peach fruitiness almost strawberry in aroma. Clear amber brown with little head. Peach, kiwi fruit, watermelon like flavor with some nuttiness. Light body and a fizzy mouth feel. Finish is fruity and moderately bitter. Interesting.

This was a totally decent dunkelweizen that I would like Shiner to bring back, as it was one of my favorites.

This was a really nice Dunkel. Lighter than I would like, but the flavor was all there. Why was this retired in favor of Holiday Cheer? Bad move, guys.

Pours a darkish red amber with a tan head. Not much aroma. Flavor is smokey with a bit of coffee and malt. Hoppy aftertaste. Not bad. Retired, but I’d be willing to bet it will be back.

Late June/Early July 2008: Shiner Dunkel Weizen has a filtered dark amber appearance. There is a fleeting khaki head and a moderate to generous level of carbonation. The aroma has caramel wheat and hints of banana and sweet roast. The flavor is very similar with sweet caramelized wheat malt, bread crust, and a hint of banana. It is kind of sweet like a brown ale. It has a medium-light body and subtle mouthfeel.

12 fl. oz. bottle (twist-off) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #219 for this beer.
