When you read "hop-jacked lager" on the label it gives hope of a amber ale. But then thereís the word ílagerí thrown in and confusion ensues. Chalky, thin bodied, sub-par beer with light bitterness and a bit of citrus in the aftertaste. I thought I was in for a one-of-a-kind experience to honor Kosmos Spoetzl and was left with a bit of a stinker of a pale lager.

bottle. Pours orange with a thin, white head. Nose is weak of nut and grain. Taste is a little better with nut, grain grass and caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. Overall, not bad.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours a clear copper color with small amount of bubbly fizzy offwhite head. Aroma is sweet corn and metal. Flavor watery dry sweet biscut base with slight grassy metallic finish. Overall, like a bad version of yuengling.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
[Bottle] Pours a darker golden color with plenty of white head. Grainy and grassy aroma. Weak flavor of grass and light hops. The strongest notes that I get here are in the metallic finish. Light palate and high carbonation. Iíd rather drink anything else from Shiner before this.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Experienced from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours a straw to medium golden color with a long-lasting white head. Slight notes of citrus come through in the nose, surprising given the fact that it is a lager. On the other hand, it was difficult to find any notes of malt or German noble hops. The bottle claims that the beer is a "hop-jacked lager." Actually tasting the beer reveals that it has nothing of the sort. No hop flavor is detectable, nor is any hop aroma. The palate tastes more like a MGD or a Rolling Rock than a real craft beer. Ghastly.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle into a pint glass. An interesting somewhat hopped up addition by Shiner. One of their better beers, but still doesnít blow me away.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 16, 2009 12 oz. Darkish topaz with a lasting disc of bubbles. Mild aroma of grass, caramel and lightly tart apple. Flavor is a mix of the same, with some toasted grain and a crisp grassy finish. Tastes kinda like a marzen lite. Light-medium body is dry and tingly. One of the better Shiner products Iíve had.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Another disappointing selection from Shiner. Iíve come to the conclusion that their beer is brewed for the masses. Pours a clear copper color with a decent white head that is gone quickly. Bland taste on the palate with a slight malt aroma. Iím glad only one came in the six pack.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Initial impression from the pour does not impress, as there is not much aroma and little head retention. The first sip reminds me a bit of Sam Adams Boston Lager, but that quickly fades as the long malty finish disappoints. There is a touch of sweetness to this medium bodied clear amber lager, but it leaves me wanting for more. While it may be a better alternative to the mass market lagers, Iíll not pursue it again.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a small white head. Grain and sweet malts dominate the aroma. Flavor is much the same, with a slight metallic flavor in the mix. This really wasnít all that bad... Iíve had worse.
