COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Kosmos Spoetzl knew how to brew great beer. Born in Bavaria, Kosmos’ mastery of German brewing carried him as far as Egypt before he found his way to the small Texas town of Shiner. Our proud brewery still carries his name and commitment to excellence in brewing. This full-flavored, hop-jacked lager is every bit as unique as the man himself and our way of saluting the brewmaster who started it all.”

Bottle in San Antonio. Reserve? What does the normal kosmos taste like? Metallic and sour notes throughout that ruined it for me. There was some redeeming malt in there but it was buried deep.

Pours copper tinted amber with a 2 finger chunky beige head that has good retention. Aroma is caramel, grass, citrus, metal, straw, and a little mineral. Flavor is citrus, grass, butterscotch, cardboard, metal, caramel and a little forest like earthiness. Finish is crisp mineral notes, some citrus and herbal hops and metal. Palate is light-medium bodied with a dry feel throughout and a sharp, but not too sharp carbonation. Not bad stuff really, theres alot wrong with it but somehow it pulls together to be pretty passable overall.

( 12oz bottle thanks to angrypirate) He must have been angry to have provided this one. What did I do to deserve this?! Pours very clear amber, decent bubbly head with ok lacing. Nose of slight sour notes, meaty. The taste has a lager-like bite, grain, tart/old apples. Nice carbonation but a bad aftertaste. Speaking of which, what exactly was Kosmos RESERVING this beer for?? Probably some in-laws that he hated. Here guys, drink this!

Bottle ($1.48 Single) and served in standard pint glass: Pours a clean golden hue with a good fizzy head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of wet pale grains, corn, slight oxidization, buttery and a some grassy hop. The taste is exactly what you expected (sadly), a adjunct influenced lager with a light skunked character. There is a bit more bitterness upon the finish than found in most cheap ’merican versions but that is like putting lipstick on a pig. To call this "reserve" give an impression of higher quality... not the case.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours a clear deep golden with a small off-white head. Biscuity nose. Medium body, again these biscuity malts with a slightly metallic touch. A subtle bitterness. Has a little more than your typical Pale Lager. 301112

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2011 Crystal clear yellow, decent head. Aroma of a bitter pilsner. Little more to it than a domestic but finishes dry and bitter. Not life-changing. 2.6
RE-RATE 3/3/11 Bottle. So I went a little crazy when pouring this beer, and held the bottle literally a foot above the glass, and the head went everywhere. (Insert that’s what she said joke here) I can at least say that this beer has a decent head response! It pours a clear, bright orange color with a tall foamy white head.

The aroma is a little watery and grainy, but what is there is fairly faint. There are some corn elements also but it’s not too offensive. The label said that this beer was “hop-jacked”. Well I honestly couldn’t detect any hops until after the beer warmed up AND I read the label. So there’s no telling whether I actually smelled hops or if it was implanted in my brain while I slept on a plane.

The flavor is very bready with lots of bitter grains. It pushes to an increasingly bitter finish with some efforts of corn in the mix. It also has a bit of a watery mouthfeel. As it warms up there are more and more bitter, metallic notes. I guess the bitterness comes from the hops? Not impressed. If there are hops in this they are hiding behind a kernel of corn. Kosmos would be rolling over in his massive tomb filled with Bavarian hops after trying this. At least I have an episode of Conan on my DVR to drink to!
