Another gift, from a native Texan that raved on and on about this beer. A clear medium gold, I somehow was expecting a bit more color, large white head. Light smokey, ham scent that carries into the flavor. Iím not a huge Rauch fan, probably due to beers like this.

Bottle: Pours a nice golden straw color with a foamy white head. The aromas of woody smoke hit my nose as soon as it crossed the top of the glass. Itís nice and grainy, but that is hidden behind the smoke. It all seems very forced IMO. Not something that I have missed since.

Rated on 7-26-2010 at Smokey Bones in Fort Wayne, IN. This bottled beer pours a small white head with a lengthy retention, transparent yellow body, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, crisp, refreshing, and smoke. The taste is semi-sweet, malty, crisp, refreshing, mildly smokey, and has a short dry finish. The palate is soft carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. A so-so session and/or lawnmower beer. It does not have a lot of character or flavor.

12oz bottle. Pours a bright, clear straw gold color with two finger white foam head. Smells of yeast, pale malt, and slight grain. Tastes of smoke up front, then strong yeast, some pale malt, sweet malt, also slight hop in the background. Smooth and crisp with a high carbonation level.

Bottle:   Pale coppery color, translucent, light white head, a little foamy, nice lacing.   Certainly smokey on the nose, but also a lot of that band-aid like malts.   Some smoked meat, salty too.   Grainy sort of smokiness up front, a little plastic like, some band-aid.   Yeah, this one seems to have a bit more plastic and band-aid than most.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   At least it has a decent malt base.   Seems a little too artificial, with too much band-aid and plastic.   Not bad, but not enough smoked/burnt/charred wood.

Not a huge fan of drinking a beer that has an overly smoke taste. Smoke taste is way too strong...might be a good beer to cook with;

This draft brew from a restaurant poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a typically carbonated light orange colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was smoky and woody. The bubbly mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The very mild bubbly lingering flavor contained notes of barely noticeable smokiness and malt. An OK brew just nothing special. the bubbliness covers up the mild malt.

This is arguably the worst beer Iíve had from Shiner. As a helles, its not terrible even though itís a bit heavy on the caramelly sweetness. The smoke, however, is what was unnecessary. Overly smoked, chemically flavored.

I wish they would bring this one back instead of that sorry grapefruit thing with which they replaced it. I really enjoyed this one with brisket and ribs on a hot summer day. Itís smokiness was a perfect accompaniment to a Fourth of July Barbecue.

From notes. 12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Aroma of caramel and light wood smoke. Taste is about the same. Overall, very good. My first smoke beer. I really like this.

Originally reviewed: 6/16/10. 12oz bottle picked up from Whole Foods. Poured into a pint glass. Pours a darker orange with a thin off-white head on top. Little lace sticks to the glass. Scents of sweet malts, and just a faint whiff of smoked mesquite. Expected a bit more here, but canít say Iím disappointed. Glad itís not so in-your-face since this is a lighter style (Helles). The body is crisp and clean. Carbonation level is moderate. Flavors of grains, sweet honey tones, and again, light smoke. Nothing too bold here. Just a background smokiness that complements the style well. I liked this. It didnít smack of smoke, but it played the part well. Not bad.
