Shipyard Applehead is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale with a delightful apple aroma and subtle cinnamon flavor. This beer is available in 6-packs, 12-packs and on draft.

“We asked Pumpkinhead fans what other flavors would they like to see and their answer was apple,” said director of sales and marketing, Bruce Forsley. “We listened to what our fans asked for and created Shipyard Applehead. Master brewer Alan Pugsley has combined the subtle sweetness of cinnamon and apple with a clean, refreshing wheat ale to create a whole new beer experience.”

A nice and refreshing fruit beer. Aroma was a little weak. Cinnamon and hints of apple, but they were very distant. Pour was a nice bubbly light gold with a thin white film for a head. Taste was crisp and delicious. Sweet malt start off before the heavy apple and cinnamon take over. Tastes like an apple pie. The nice carbonation brings out the sweetness in the aftertaste. It never gets too sweet or too fruity. It stays just right. Would love this in the summer! Too bad the aroma wasn’t bigger or this would be closer to 4

sample bottle 2/27/12 clear fuji apple juice color with a short lived white head. smells and tastes like a dusty michael’s hobby store or a cheap cinnamon apple candle... christ, it is even waxy feeling...

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours light amber. Slight whitish head. Cinnamon is the primary aroma - but the effect is something like a cold baked apple. Med minus body. Flavor is cinnamon/sweet with some apple skin, and there is a bit of skin astringency. Calling it cinnamon beer would be more on point.

Wonderful apple, honey, and cinnamon aroma, even a little bready. Clear amber, thin head. Drier and breadier flavor. Apple and nutmeg flavor, quite artificial. A kiss of blueberry in the finish. I rather enjoyed the pumpkin beers but there is something not quite right in this beer and I call shenanigans. I do hope that artificial flavorings were not employed here.

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2012 Exactly what it promises - so in that respect I think Shipyard did a nice job on this. Smells of cinnamon and apple cider - almost like a "spiced apple" yankee candle. Taste is cinnamon with an apple and malt backbone. Probably would be great in the summer, and a fun novelty beer - especially for those who have been turned off by beer in the past.

Draft at the Thirsty Moose. I’m a pretty big fan of most of Shipyard’s offerings but this one falls short and I’m not sure what the purpose is. The taste is mostly nutmeg and very much the same flavor as the Pumpkinhead swapping out pumpkin for apple flavoring. If I was looking for apple flavor though, I’d go with a Magners Cider instead. While the taste was not bad it was forgettable and feels a bit gimmicky.

Pours a clear amber with a bready, slightly sour aroma. The flavor has a hint of apples and a touch of cinnamon. Drink it fast and ice cold for best results.

Draft at World of Beer in Land O Lakes. Pours a light golden yellow with virtually no head whatsoever. Aroma is fairly sweet with the obvious apple notes. Flavor is not as sweet as expected with more spiced notes from the cinnamon. Overall not bad, but not something I’d want more than a pint of in one sitting.
