Commercial Description:
Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

22oz bottle, shared with Katie. This guy was a bit disappointing, considering the price tag. English-style Barley Wine appearance, near black center color with burgundy edges. Some short-lived tan head. Aroma leans smoky, with peat, chocolates, light coffee and charcoal. Dry smokiness persists in the flavor, with nuances of dark fruit, stale hops and a slight vegetative end. Thin and lightly fizzy. Not interesting at all. Eh.

bottle thanks to kp. Shared at February Houston tasting. Pours a dark brown with no head. Nose is of caramel and earthy. Taste is of fruit and caramel. Mouthfeel is medium with a bitter finish. Not that good.

Pours out dark like a robust coffee with a tall lingering head. Aromas of molasses and roasted coffee persist. Full nectar with mellow carbonation. This brew is heavily roasted and laden with molasses. Not much else but some green vegetation rind. The finish bitters up a bit.

dark brown with an ruby hue under a small brown head. syrupy appearance while pouring. aroma has notes of chocolate, molasses, caramel with very little hops. different than most BW’s. flavor is very roasted much like a stout or porter. lots of chocolate and caramel. a bit hot with alcohol but not bad. dry finish. better than the imperial porter from the same series but this one actually reminds me more an imp porter than a BW.

Bomber from Sam’s in Downers Grove, Illinois: The body has the color of dark orange pekoe tea capped by a respectable tan head that fades slowly but completely. The aroma is butterscotch and toffee with a light earthy bitterness. The flavor pretty well reflects that although some alcohol and bitter herbs are added. The finish is sticky sweet with a dirty bitter bite. Okay.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a small cream colored head. Butterscotch and malt aroma. Rich malt flavor with butterscotch and a bit of fruitiness. Medium-plus bodied. Malt, light caramel, and butterscotch lingers.

On tap at Toronado for Barleywine fest ’09. One of the least impressive I had (tough competition though). Dark amber color. Malty on the aroma and flavor with a little hop bitterness and ever-so-slight fruitiness. Medium palate. Not bad but not great.
