Commercial Description:
Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

A decent barley wine. Nothing special but still has some good flavor and color. Good end of the night beer.

Pours a three finger light tan head that leaves a good lace. Almost black color some mahogany highlights. Slight malty nose. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Flavor is some sweet maltiness but lacks the seriousness of a good barleywine, musty bitterness at finish. There are better barleywines like Southern Tier’s Backburner. Pricey for Shipyard, $10.15 for a 22 oz bottle from Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Pretty bad. Dry malt flavor and aroma. No hops, no sweetness, and just a strange aroma and flavor of dry grain. Oxidized; maybe.

On tap @ redlight. Deep ruby-red color, moderate khaki head. Sweet aroma, mild earthy hops, slight alcohol. Pretty plain taste - slightly sweet with an almost minty finish. Just kind of there.

Was raved about by my local liquor store clerk so i picked it up. poured a brownish red that was darker int he glass with a thin head. smell was like molasses and taste was same but with a fruitiness like cantaloupe. finish was dry but had some alcohol tinge as well.

22oz bottle. Very dark red, almost black, but some light was making it through. Some dark fruit aroma, but it was a little modest for a barley wine. A little bitter hop bite, and some more dark fruits, a little thin, would like to see a bit more out of this.

22oz bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Pours a clear deep brown color with a beige head that left little lacing. Nose was very weak, light hops, candied fruits and caramel. Flavor was lightly boozy with hop bitterness and metallic undertones. No bueno.

Poured a clear brown color with a touch of red and off-white head. Sweet candy aroma with a not so nice dirty smell. The flavor was sweet and thankfully short. Pine hops and more dirtiness. Semi-sweet bitter finish. Medium bodied.
