Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

Aroma: Caramel, butterscotch, barley sugar. Not a lot. Strength is low. Appearance: Brown, very thick and creamy head that never falls down. Too much head. Taste: Again very caramel but with a strong bitterness as finish. Hops are very active. Caramel, malt and sugar notes are killed by hops. Too much bitterness for a Barley Wine. Sugars are powerless in this fight against hops. Mouth feel is thin without a lot of texture also. A DECEPTION.

Bottle @ Bishops Arms Järntorget, Göteborg. Hazy very dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and oxidized. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Sweet and rather bitter finish with warming alcohol. 250713

Pours a dark brownish mahogany color . Nose is woody with vanilla and carame. Taste is fruity with currants, raisins with caramel and vanilla. Finish is sweet with the same flavors, not your typical Barleywine . Quaff Score 8 / 10

On tap at Tampa Bay Brewing Coral Springs. Pours dark brown with a brown head and aroma of fruits and vanilla. Taste is similar, lots of vanilla up front with fruity, caramel notes and a dry, fruity finish. Nice barley wine, although it doesn’t drink as one

Bottle. This is a real letdown of a barley wine. Its missing so many pieces that i look for. Pass on it.

A - Pours a dark ruby brown with a 1 finger mocha head that forms a ceiling. Good lacing patterns. S - Chocolate covered raspberries, fruity malt, roasted/burnt grain, alcohol vapors. T - Dark fruits-figs, berries, sweet toffee malt, the chocolate seems to stay in the background, brown sugar, toasted brown rice. An herbal cocoa bitterness starts early grows towards the finish. M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. The alcohol is hidden well. The hops kinda threw me off. Moderately hopped for an English Barleywine. I didn’t mind too much though. Drinks good. I would buy this again if it was cheaper. Serving type: bottle 02-03-2011

Pours a very dark brown colour with low off white head leaving little lace. Aromas of rich sweet malt, caramel, toasted malts, sweet dried fruits, and a warming alcohol sensation. Flavour is sweet malt, warm alcohol, caramel, dried fruits, mild bitterness and toffee.

Thanks to cfrancis for this. Pours a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. Aroma of sweet dried fruits, figs, chocolate and nuts. Taste is sweet caramel, figs, dried fruits and a heavy malt profile that finishes with some roast malt bitterness and some alcohol. Overall this is a very good and interesting barley wine however it doesn’t fit the style.

Bouteille 625ml.

625 ml bottle. Pours a ruby-tinted brown with a resilient beige head. Smell is malty and boozy. Taste is very malty, some caramel, not as tasty as I’d expect from a barley wine...Earthy and herbal hops, some lingering herbal hops post-finish. Medium to strong body, smooth mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Not the best of barley wines.
