3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
65 cl bottle @ HBF. Rated on 21.05.2010
Aroma is rather malty with some raisins. Flavour has harsh, sweet malt, some raisins, ripe fruits and hints of toffee. Too harsh, a barley wine in English way.

The beer pours a solid dark brown with black edges, and creamy tan coloured cap. The aroma is grainy malt, some roast, and some metallic hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, metal, and some molasses/maple sweetness in the mix.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A decent beer, brought in to the LCBO for a decent price of $8. Not what I expect from an English barleywine, very bitter finish, dark bodied, chocolate malts. Let’s see how my aged bottle from Maine holds up over the years.Above average carbonation. Good ingredients, but Not as drinkable as it could be.

625 mL bottle. Pours a dark brassy amber with a decent off white head. Minimal lacing. Aromas of cocoa, pine, aged malt and roasted cereal. Sweet, but not overly, with a great bitter punch and a lingering dryness. Tastefully complex.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
625ml bottle: rating this after sampling it fresh, this sample has a couple of months in the cellar on it. Pours a hazed dark brown with ruby highlights. Sticky 2 finger cap like espresso foam, laces the snifter well. Aroma is complex dark fruits, treacle, raisin bread, cherry pipe tobacco, a little vanilla becomes more pungent as it warms - nice! Rich oleaginous mouth feel, robust body.fruity complex character, well balanced, well rounded very drinkable for such a big ale. Flavor profile begins with a rush of malt complexity, dried fruits and hops slamming the palate, then this becomes a complexity of flavors and tones whirling over the tongue - dates, vanilla, cinnamon bun, dark treacle, coffee, cocoa, dried cherry - then the finish becomes pleasingly bitter with resinous hops taking over as it goes clean, roasty and lightly dry with a lingering roast/bittering after taste. Wow! What a great Barley wine. This begs to be barrel aged.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours almost black with cocoa head. Smells like sweet grains, and dark fruits. Initially you get sweet corn syrup and malty flavours, but it finishes hoppy, with hints of roasted malt and cocoa. Interesting. Unlike any barley wine I’ve ever had.
