Commercial Description:
Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

Grainy Tannic smell and flavor. Definitely English in style. Weak for a barley wine. Raisin, licorice, Bing cherry flavors. Dry, dry, dry and really coats the mouth and tongue. This beer is not pleasant or satisfying but it is unique. It is well made and if you like it you really do but I don’t. Middle of the road beer.

Daytona 500 tasting. Foil topped bomber, just like the pic. Clear, deep amber with a beige head. Kinda crappy weak caramel and spice, some earth. Astringent flavor, lightly fruity and hot. Meh.

22 ounce bottle purchased at the BevMo in Vacaville, CA. Aroma has some fruits, raisins, and a touch of buttery diacetyl present. Some ethanol is also detected. Slightly sweet. Dark cola colored body with a nice light tan head that leaves good lacing. An attractive brew. Sweet, sugary, underattenuated malty, syrupy start. Some hints of raisin are in the middle with a little bit of leather later on. Finishes with some more sweetness. Other than this being too sweet and underattenuated, the flavor of this isn’t too bad.

Bottle. Nose is very malty, like a trip to the Home Brew Mart. Pours a deep gold red copper with a nice beige head. Flavors full of malts, especially pale malts. Some candy or jam notes too. A little cheap dark cherries. Mouth was mild, and effervescent. I liked this one but did not really seem like a barley wine at all.

Aroma: Chocolate, toffee and ripe fruit. Appearance: Midnight amber with no head. Flavor: Chocolate, caramel, toffee, ripe fruits. A bit of booze in there too. Palate: Perfect thickness for the style. Overall: The first non West Coast BW that I really liked. I enjoyed this.

This poured a dark coca cola brown with a short lasting brown head and light lacing. Nose is of roasted malts some ripe fruit. Mouthfeel was very alcoholic and somewhat astringent. Flavor is malty. Finish is watery and there are some unpleasant aftertastes. This seems a lot more like a mediocre porter than a barley wine. The gold foil on top does not make this a good brew.

Nearly black body with garnet at the edges. The head was dense with a medium khaki colored head. Smells of shortbread cookies and cocoa come through in the nose. There was also some plum. The taste was prunes with a strongly boozy finish. As I drank I also got notes of cocoa and weird buttered hamburger buns. Relatively subtle, this is strangely watery tasting for having such a strongly alcoholic finish. Decent, but I would like a little more malt body for all the alcohol.
