Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

@Emporium-on tap-pours very dark copper with a cascading tight foamy tan head and heavy lacing. Aroma is medium malt with some sweet, spice. Taste follows. Not what I would consider in the barleywine style box.

625ml bottle. Pours a thick foamy brownish head. Complete dark brown colour, with reddish hues. Faint alcohol smell. Malty aroma and a bit of yeast. Nice creamy and yeasty mouthfeel. Good lacing. Dark chocolate flavour, sweet malts, nuts, and a hint of caramel. Pretty bitter aftertaste. Strong stuff but tasty.

625ml bottle from the LCBO in Toronto, Ontario. Rich mahogany in colour with a thin tan head, good lacing. The aroma is of caramel, roasted malts, some chocolate, bread and alcohol. The flavour is lightly sweet, malty, dark chocolate, some dark fruits, alcohol and some light hops. Bitter warming mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, malty and warming. Nice but doesn’t have the hop bite of other American Barley Wines.

750 mL caged and corked bottle at home. Pours opaque dark brown with a moderate, creamy tan head, medium retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is dates and figs, toast and caramel malt, light roast and chocolate malt notes underneath with earthy hops and spicy/perfumey alcohol. Flavor is lightly sweet malt, candied dark alcohol soaked fruits, medium earthy and woody hops, medium hop bitterness and a slightly sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation with light alcohol warmth.

65 cl bottle, bb 12/2014. Very dark brown beer with a thick brown head. Aroma is a huge mixture of dark malts making their way into chocolate, dark bread, nutty and wooden notes, but not smokey. Then there’s a nive blend of UK hops. Alcohol is really noticeable, warming. A red wine attitude, quite complex but not excessively, reminds me of the Guinness Special Export, this fits well in the Stout cathegory rather than barley wine. Taste is well balances, nice sensation waves from malts and hops finish, moderately bitter. Body is full, carbonation is proper, mouthfilling, dry finish. I did like this one a lot and it’s good for winter.

"i’m not sure why i was expecting more from Shipyard...maybe the shnazzy bottle, or the $7.99 price tag (mine was on sale for $6.99 - yeah me)...but I was. A signature or reserve series is supposed to represent your best, and if this is the best Shipyard has to offer, well... Pours a dark carmel tinged brown, almost as dark as a Porter, similar to Marin’s BW. The aroma is nice if not as complex as I’d hoped. Definitely sweet malt dominated, with some vanilla, caramel, and a touch of dark fruit in there as well. The taste was also sweet-leaning...like Alaskan’s but much much simpler, and therefore not nearly as appealing. Had some more vanilla, oak, raisin, sugary qualities, that while not completely unpleasing, were fairly boring for the style. Low-medium complexity. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel with more than expected carbonation (although still pretty low). Low head and lacing. I wanted to move on to a different beer by the end. Overall, an ok beer, maybe even above average, but for $7...a crappy Barleywine. Way better and/or cheaper options out there. Let’s see...$2.50 for an Old Horizontal or $7 for this. Hmmmmmm."

Aroma is the best part of this beer. I got a good whiff of chocolate and the malt backbone. However, the taste falls flat and the aftertaste has a decent amount of alcohol burn. Overall, not a balanced beer and is average at best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, shared with Robbie. Deep sienna hue, average light gold head. Sweet caramel, light kirsch, a tad boozy (even after 18 months), with a very astringent bitter finish.

Bottle @ home.

Dark reddish brown with a light beige colored head. Aroma of caramel, grapes and other sweet dark fruits, chocolate, toast, and wood. Tastes sweet and fruity, toasty, and moderately bitter. Something isn’t quite right with the aftertaste, but other than that it’s not bad. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a very dark black/brown body with a small white head that dies within several seconds, body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some light spotty lacing is left. The smell had a roasted barley and chocolate come out pretty strong. Some malts and alcohol come out as the beer warms. The taste had a roasted barley and chocolate come out fairly strong but some dark fruits come out in the taste as the beer warms. The aftertaste is a bit smoky. The palate sat about a medium to heavy with a good carbonation felt. Overall, its not bad, there seemed to be a lot of different flavors going on. I liked this and am pretty sure I’d have this again.
