Nose is malty, oaky, with cherry, feety Simcow hops, fine tobacco, prunes. Tastes dsrk malty, with figgy fruit, dark choc, rauchy cacao notes, heavy hops, nuts, and oaky bourbon. Gets rauchier late, and comes off more imperial stouty than barleywiney as it warms up. A unique barleywine, like mixing half and half chocolate impy stout with a fruity, very hoppy barleywine. Balanced beer but not a barley wine. oteyj (822), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 5, 2009 Dark brown pour with one finger beige head. Aroma is dark fruit sweet malt with some resinous hoppy characteristics, fruity esters, and caramel toffee malt. Flavor us surprisingly roasty- chocolate malt comes through quite a bit. Chocolate and burnt coffee notes complement a sweet caramel profile. Palate is Medium to thick for the style. I wasn’t hoping for much out of this, but it was a pleasant surprise. A bit underrated perhaps. daknole (3032), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

First rating, hopefully my memory and notes will do it justice. Poured a cloudy amber color. Aroma hits with a great dose of floral hops and then the caramel, toffee and fruit hits home. The flavor is a great combination of some floral and spicy hops with some sweetness of caramel, sugar, and fruit. The bottles they were serving were very fresh and I had to agree with the Shipyard people that I spoke with that this will be amazing in a year or two. curly (770), Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Taste is mild sweet chocolate and roast malt. Definitely an interesting barley wine, more like a porter. Thin body, dark chocolate and coffee type bitterness. Smooth creamy vanilla texture. 6ROW (275), corpus christi, Texas, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 8, 2009 22 oz bottle purchased from Tower Package in Atlanta. I didn’t find this as offensive and terrible as some people seem to. It is pretty much on par with Shipyard’s other beers. Poured a dark brown color with a one finger tan head that disappeared pretty quick. The aroma contains a lot of caramel malt and some earthy hop notes. Notes of dark fruit are present as well. This doesn’t have the character of most BWs (brown sugar, molasses, etc.). The flavor is pretty solid. A good malt base gives way to an earthy finish. The body is a bit thin, but the mouthfeel and carbonation are spot on. I found this to be an enjoyable, solid brew.
