Pours a thick black, no head. Aroma: Chocolate, raisins, malt. Palate: thick bodied, creamy, bit oily at the end. Taste: mildly sweet, fairly bitter and dry finish. Not much flavour here.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a very dark black/brown body with a small white head that dies within several seconds, body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some light spotty lacing is left.
The smell had a roasted barley and chocolate come out pretty strong. Some malts and alcohol come out as the beer warms.
The taste had a roasted barley and chocolate come out fairly strong but some dark fruits come out in the taste as the beer warms. The aftertaste is a bit smoky.
The palate sat about a medium to heavy with a good carbonation felt.
Overall, its not bad, there seemed to be a lot of different flavors going on. I liked this and am pretty sure I’d have this again.

Corpo medio-abbondante, effervescenza gentile, struttura oleosa e parzialmente liquorosa, finale persistente. Buona!!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is definitely a maritime beverage, has a salty sea flavor and aroma to it. Nice dark brown caramel pour with a slight off white head that leaves lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, toast, raisin, roast, chocolate cookies, nuts, salty sea, oak, basement, earth. Has a nice coffee thing going on, with some licorice or star anise lingering on the palate. There is even some plum and dark fruit as it warms, some brandy flavors. Full bodied, oily, sticky texture, soft carbonation, mellow finish. A nice variation of the style, almost a brown ale/stout/barley wine hybrid.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rated on 11-30-2009 (Bottle) This beer forms a small fizzy tan head that mostly diminished, opaque dark brown body with a red tint and one ring of lacing. The Aroma is roasted, caramel malt, hoppy and fruity. The Taste is hops, chocolate, caramel malt, roasty, alcohol, and has a dry finish. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this certainly is a different take on this beer’s style and for that it lost points with me. The flavors did not leave me wanting to have this beer again.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
625ml bottle. I’m not 100% sure how long this has been sitting in the cellar, but it’s been a while. Best before is July 2013. Pours a dark, dark brown with a thin beige head. Tons of dried fruit on the nose. Raisin, dates, figs, with molasses, brown sugar, and dark bread notes. Taste wise, the bitterness makes itself known immediately, molasses, plum, dates, eucalyptus like notes, with some very noticable alcohol that leads into a dry dark rye bread note, dried fruits, dark coffee and a Fisherman’s Friend like note that rides it out until the end. I like it. No complaints here.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From the 650 ml. bottle. 2012 batch cellared for a year. The pouur us dark brown to close to black with a full and soft tan head that lingers on top. Served at about 55 degrees I expect. These aromas are something else with that Ringwood yeast but not quite as prevalent as some of Shipyard’s other brews. Beyond that there is a sweet roasted malty character, raisins, dark fruit, melted butter (from the Ringwood), brown sugar, and very subtle hops. The body is medium to full. The taste is eloquent and mellow thanks to the aging with its malt character, sweetness, and low bitterness. This was an especially good beer. I liked it far more than other reviewers I have read. Maybe cellaring is the key.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. Aroma of sweet dried fruits, figs, chocolate and nuts. Taste is sweet caramel, figs, dried fruits and a heavy malt profile that finishes with some roast malt bitterness and some alcohol. Overall this is a very good and interesting barley wine however it doesn’t fit the style.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Part of a bomber from LCBO, served cool in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep mahogany with a thin tan head.
Aroma: Rich, deep dark dried fruits, inky molasses and brown sugar, some chocolate and licorice tones, very little booziness, a little leafy/woodsy hops.
Palate: Medium+ body, a bit powdery, with relaxed effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of dark dried fruit and roasted malt, dry, almost burnt sugar, deep treacle, molasses, a little licorice, very deep and sweet; sweet but not thick or cloying with pretty good bitterness and a long, deep, dark finish.
A bit different, fairly drinkable.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pleasant, rich color and complex aroma. The palate is unexpectedly smooth, and the taste balances nicely between malty sweetness and bitter hops.
Very nice aftertaste with a slight alcoholic heat. Not a typical american BW, but enjoyable all the same.
This was rated "best in show" at a small tasting I arranged for my co-workers.
