COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

Black pour with frothy tan head. Good lacing. Very malty sweet aroma with chocolate and a hint of yeast. Full bodied. Big malt flavor. Bitterness balances the sweetness nicely. Very good beer.

"iím not sure why i was expecting more from Shipyard...maybe the shnazzy bottle, or the $7.99 price tag (mine was on sale for $6.99 - yeah me)...but I was. A signature or reserve series is supposed to represent your best, and if this is the best Shipyard has to offer, well... Pours a dark carmel tinged brown, almost as dark as a Porter, similar to Marinís BW. The aroma is nice if not as complex as Iíd hoped. Definitely sweet malt dominated, with some vanilla, caramel, and a touch of dark fruit in there as well. The taste was also sweet-leaning...like Alaskanís but much much simpler, and therefore not nearly as appealing. Had some more vanilla, oak, raisin, sugary qualities, that while not completely unpleasing, were fairly boring for the style. Low-medium complexity. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel with more than expected carbonation (although still pretty low). Low head and lacing. I wanted to move on to a different beer by the end. Overall, an ok beer, maybe even above average, but for $7...a crappy Barleywine. Way better and/or cheaper options out there. Letís see...$2.50 for an Old Horizontal or $7 for this. Hmmmmmm."

Aroma is the best part of this beer. I got a good whiff of chocolate and the malt backbone. However, the taste falls flat and the aftertaste has a decent amount of alcohol burn. Overall, not a balanced beer and is average at best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, shared with Robbie. Deep sienna hue, average light gold head. Sweet caramel, light kirsch, a tad boozy (even after 18 months), with a very astringent bitter finish.

Bottle @ home.

Dark reddish brown with a light beige colored head. Aroma of caramel, grapes and other sweet dark fruits, chocolate, toast, and wood. Tastes sweet and fruity, toasty, and moderately bitter. Something isnít quite right with the aftertaste, but other than that itís not bad. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a very dark black/brown body with a small white head that dies within several seconds, body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some light spotty lacing is left. The smell had a roasted barley and chocolate come out pretty strong. Some malts and alcohol come out as the beer warms. The taste had a roasted barley and chocolate come out fairly strong but some dark fruits come out in the taste as the beer warms. The aftertaste is a bit smoky. The palate sat about a medium to heavy with a good carbonation felt. Overall, its not bad, there seemed to be a lot of different flavors going on. I liked this and am pretty sure Iíd have this again.

Corpo medio-abbondante, effervescenza gentile, struttura oleosa e parzialmente liquorosa, finale persistente. Buona!!

This is definitely a maritime beverage, has a salty sea flavor and aroma to it. Nice dark brown caramel pour with a slight off white head that leaves lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, toast, raisin, roast, chocolate cookies, nuts, salty sea, oak, basement, earth. Has a nice coffee thing going on, with some licorice or star anise lingering on the palate. There is even some plum and dark fruit as it warms, some brandy flavors. Full bodied, oily, sticky texture, soft carbonation, mellow finish. A nice variation of the style, almost a brown ale/stout/barley wine hybrid.

Rated on 11-30-2009 (Bottle) This beer forms a small fizzy tan head that mostly diminished, opaque dark brown body with a red tint and one ring of lacing. The Aroma is roasted, caramel malt, hoppy and fruity. The Taste is hops, chocolate, caramel malt, roasty, alcohol, and has a dry finish. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this certainly is a different take on this beerís style and for that it lost points with me. The flavors did not leave me wanting to have this beer again.

625ml bottle. Iím not 100% sure how long this has been sitting in the cellar, but itís been a while. Best before is July 2013. Pours a dark, dark brown with a thin beige head. Tons of dried fruit on the nose. Raisin, dates, figs, with molasses, brown sugar, and dark bread notes. Taste wise, the bitterness makes itself known immediately, molasses, plum, dates, eucalyptus like notes, with some very noticable alcohol that leads into a dry dark rye bread note, dried fruits, dark coffee and a Fishermanís Friend like note that rides it out until the end. I like it. No complaints here.
