Shipyard Black IPA is for the pirate in you. This is a dark black beer that combines a rich malty character with the crisp flavor and aroma of American Northwest hops. It’s a beer the legendary Blackbeard would have hoisted as he sailed the seven seas. It’s worth walking the plank for!

Pours black with light tan head. A light coffee and malt aroma. A malty, coffee, taste with citrus hops. A light bitter aftertaste but not overwhelming.

12oz screwtop bottle. Pours black (as it should) with an off white head. Middle of the road black IPA but this is a style that I really like so middle of the road is still fine with me.

Aroma: awesome grapefruit nose Appearance: dark, thin, two finger head, foamy caramel lacing Taste: grapefruit, burnt/char, bitter, as an IPA should be Palate: thin, not as dry as most IPAs Overall: not the black IPA I was hoping for, still a damn good beer

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours highly carbonated dark brown with tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, resiny hops, cacao. Tastes resiny, piney, with dark malt, cacao, bitter finish. This one blasts you with IBUs from pillar to post, and will keelhaul your ass if you aren’t careful, you limey heathen!

Super aromat chmielowy, owocowy, a do tego prażone nasiona. Świetna prezencja, piana jednak kiepska. W smaku brakuje nieco goryczki, ale sprawia wrażenie jasnego piwa.

Bottle from Signal Variety, Plaistow, NH. Aroma is herbal hoppy with hints of pine. Appearance is clear, very dark reddish brown--almost completely black, with thin creamy beige head with mild retention and fair lacing. Taste is moderately bitter with light sweetness. Palate is medium bodied with creamy texture but initially is too carbonated--stingy on the tongue that takes away from appreciating flavor. Finish is mostly bitter with hint of sweet and long. Overall, sweet maltiness balances off the hoppiness, which you would expect from the genre, and makes it more enjoyable to me than a straight IPA. Too much carbonation detracts from it but it is definitely an above-average beer.

Draft sample at Cherry Blossom Beer & Wine fest, deep black color with off-white head. Aroma notes of strong pine hope, smoky roasted malt and light chocolate. Taste adds resin, char and coffee. Medium-light body, moderate carbonation, dry with piney roast finish. Pretty solid black IPA.

chinchill (2755) - South Carolina, USA - APR 10, 2015
12 oz bottle. This is a well-crafted, centrist Black IPA with no apparent flaws. Mildly bitter. Medium body and carbonation. Lingering mix of equal parts hops and dark roasted grains in the aftertaste.

Another black IPA, with a very dark yellowish mahogany colour, blackish but still transparent around the edges, under a creamy, yellow light beige, lacing and stable head. Pleasant aroma of coffee grounds and coffee beans, charcoal, dried plums, cigar ashes, pine resin, bayleaf, toasted bread, roasted peanuts, banana, raisins, liquorice candy and (fairly strong) iron shavings. Rounded, smooth onset of dried fruits, a tad sweet (raisins, dried banana) with a sourish touch (orange peel), quite refreshing actually, minerally with finely sparkling carbonation, very subtle salty touch, lightly oily, creamy middle phase with very nutty and toasted malts, already mildly bitter to begin with; this bitterness strongly increases in the end, with both the coffee-like roasted bitterness and a resinous, peppery hop bitterness, drying the mouth and throat; the metallic ’sound’ I feared based on the aroma, fortunately does not come through. A subtle hint of bourbon-like, warming alcohol is there, but not disturbingly so. In all, this may not be the most amazing example of the style, but it is well crafted, well balanced and tasty. Liked it.

Very dark, with a silky smooth feel. Tastes of burnt toast, dark chocolate and coffee with a nice piney finish. Delicious!
