Shipyard Black IPA is for the pirate in you. This is a dark black beer that combines a rich malty character with the crisp flavor and aroma of American Northwest hops. Itís a beer the legendary Blackbeard would have hoisted as he sailed the seven seas. Itís worth walking the plank for!

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on September 13, 2014. I have had this a few times but I am surprised I have not posted a review. The pour is dark brown but not quite black. Decent brown head. The aroma is more like a Porter than an IPA with a coffee and dark malt character. I donít get much in the way of hops considering it is supposedly an IPA. The body is medium to full. The taste has a modest dark malt and sweet note to start but there is a flood of earthy hops that play up on the rear.

355ml bottle. Black colour, looks like a stout. Smells malty with some grapefruit hops. Tastes like a roasty stout full of "C" hops. Overall, a stout hopped like a West coast IPA; an textbook example of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Nice roasty, pine, nutty aroma. Pours black thin tan head. Light sweet taste. Medium body, smooth texture, medium bitter hop finish balances the sweetness nicely. Overall a really good black ipa

Not a bad offering from Shipyard. This is not the best black IPA Iíve ever had, but it is somewhat ahead of the average one. Not much aroma, but the taste is full and rich with malt. The hops seem to complement the malt nicely. Had this from a bottle, but Iíd order it on tap if I could find it. Pleasant quaff.

Part of a Shipyard IPA Sampler Pack. Drank from the bottle. Aroma is coffee, resin, pine, and a bit of chocolate. Taste is heavily focused on the coffee flavor with a nice presence of hop to round out the beer. Reminds be of an English IPA that focuses on the malt. Thin bodied beer with light carbonation and a slight oily feel. Not a bad beer

Bottle @ Vagabund Brauerei, Berlin - DE. Color: opaque black beer with no carbonation and small white foam. Smell: malty domination with grassy notes and floral presence. Domination of strong hops. Taste: nice malty taste with good hoppy balance. Aftertaste: notes of chocolate and great bitterness.

A beautiful black appearance and equally beautiful tan head. The aroma of heavily roasted malt is pleasing with a hint of nuttiness and over tones of chocolate and hoppy citrus. The feel is a bit heavy and reminisces of a stout. The finish has a slight but pleasant bitterness. Over all a good beer to relax and drink slowly. Not my first choice for a refreshing on after a days work outside.

Pours pretty well black with a small tan head. Muted nose of roasted malt and a bit of citrus. Roasted malt, a hint of nuttiness, and dull citric hops flavor wise. In fact the whole thing tastes a little watered down. Wouldnít mind a little more flavor.

Nice blend of roasted hops and coffee, sweet dark cherry, and dark malts. Pours dark black with a frothy head. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
