Shipyard Black IPA is for the pirate in you. This is a dark black beer that combines a rich malty character with the crisp flavor and aroma of American Northwest hops. It’s a beer the legendary Blackbeard would have hoisted as he sailed the seven seas. It’s worth walking the plank for!

Bottle. Dark cola brown, beige head. Sweet roasty aroma, hoppy undertones. Roasted and chocolate malts dominate the palate, fruity hops and light pine come in late, with moderate bitterness in the finish. Decent, maybe a bit thin.

12oz brown bottle. The pour is deep brown, some deep ruby highlighting. Beige foam, a creamy and pillowy bead. Nose presents dark chocolate, milder coffee tones and some west coast hops. Taste has big upfront roast, black coffee and chocolate. Citrus hops blend in. Bitterness is right about medium level, some raosty bitterness too. Aftertaste has roast and coffee. Thin bodied. Overall an enjoyable black IPA.

Bottle, another screw-top. Nose bitter and slightly rubbery black malt and roast with a cloying lining stuck behind. Hops are held back a bit. Pouts pitch with a soapy tan head. Taste lightly sweet and tart, very low bitterness, some tart and light roast, caramel, has the feeling of roast malt sprinkled on top afterward rather than considered thoughtfully as a base element. There’s some PNW hopping here but minimal, just a hint f citrus sliding through on the bottom. Thin, flattish light-medium body, and mostly I ask myself "why?"

355ml bottle pours black in color with a finger and a half of light beige head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate with some citrus and light roasted grains. Taste is a light roasted grain and grapefruit hop bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness. Medium bodied with decent carbonation. A nicely crafted dark IPA which is refined and tasty. Recommended.

Pitch black pour with a tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is hard to pin down, mostly malts. Huge roasted malt flavour, also chocolates and espressos with a nice hoppy bite in the background. Tastes more like a light, toasty stout or a porter than an IPA but still very nice!

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on September 13, 2014. I have had this a few times but I am surprised I have not posted a review. The pour is dark brown but not quite black. Decent brown head. The aroma is more like a Porter than an IPA with a coffee and dark malt character. I don’t get much in the way of hops considering it is supposedly an IPA. The body is medium to full. The taste has a modest dark malt and sweet note to start but there is a flood of earthy hops that play up on the rear.

355ml bottle. Black colour, looks like a stout. Smells malty with some grapefruit hops. Tastes like a roasty stout full of "C" hops. Overall, a stout hopped like a West coast IPA; an textbook example of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Nice roasty, pine, nutty aroma. Pours black thin tan head. Light sweet taste. Medium body, smooth texture, medium bitter hop finish balances the sweetness nicely. Overall a really good black ipa

Not a bad offering from Shipyard. This is not the best black IPA I’ve ever had, but it is somewhat ahead of the average one. Not much aroma, but the taste is full and rich with malt. The hops seem to complement the malt nicely. Had this from a bottle, but I’d order it on tap if I could find it. Pleasant quaff.

Part of a Shipyard IPA Sampler Pack. Drank from the bottle. Aroma is coffee, resin, pine, and a bit of chocolate. Taste is heavily focused on the coffee flavor with a nice presence of hop to round out the beer. Reminds be of an English IPA that focuses on the malt. Thin bodied beer with light carbonation and a slight oily feel. Not a bad beer
