Shipyard Black IPA is for the pirate in you. This is a dark black beer that combines a rich malty character with the crisp flavor and aroma of American Northwest hops. It’s a beer the legendary Blackbeard would have hoisted as he sailed the seven seas. It’s worth walking the plank for!

Earthy aroma with hints of chocolate, a little coffee, and some citrus hops (really nice aroma), pours black, frothy, tan foam head with bubbles, thins out pretty fast, a mixture of light sweetness and bitterness that finishes bitter, average carbonation, thick and full bodied with what I now can see is a sticky finish (I’m new at this). Lacing I have never tried a black IPA and I am finding this a delicious way to root for Denver to beat Tom Brady and company. A really nice beer all around.

Another black IPA, with a very dark yellowish mahogany colour, blackish but still transparent around the edges, under a creamy, yellow light beige, lacing and stable head. Pleasant aroma of coffee grounds and coffee beans, charcoal, dried plums, cigar ashes, pine resin, bayleaf, toasted bread, roasted peanuts, banana, raisins, liquorice candy and (fairly strong) iron shavings. Rounded, smooth onset of dried fruits, a tad sweet (raisins, dried banana) with a sourish touch (orange peel), quite refreshing actually, minerally with finely sparkling carbonation, very subtle salty touch, lightly oily, creamy middle phase with very nutty and toasted malts, already mildly bitter to begin with; this bitterness strongly increases in the end, with both the coffee-like roasted bitterness and a resinous, peppery hop bitterness, drying the mouth and throat; the metallic ’sound’ I feared based on the aroma, fortunately does not come through. A subtle hint of bourbon-like, warming alcohol is there, but not disturbingly so. In all, this may not be the most amazing example of the style, but it is well crafted, well balanced and tasty. Liked it.

Very dark, with a silky smooth feel. Tastes of burnt toast, dark chocolate and coffee with a nice piney finish. Delicious!

Color is black, 1 finger off white head. Nose is nice, a fresh pine and sweet ginger, a little smoke and roasted aromas. Taste is actually pretty good. Cream and some light table sugar taste. Roasted malts, a small coffee taste, very pine forward with grapefruit skin. Great beer.

Pours a lovely dark ruby almost blackish. Frothy tan head that lingers long. Moderate lacing. Nose is intensely hoppy a piney, earthy, with medicinal notes. Hint of licorice. Taste is on the bitter side. Medicinal aftertaste, but not off-putting. Interesting brew. I like it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Shipyard Black IPA has a thin, beige head, a dark brown appearance, and some lacing web left on the glass. The aroma is of a rich, somewhat syrupy, dark bread, and the flavor is of that, with dark-roasted, slightly charred, malt, mild hop resin, low bitterness, and yeast. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Shipyard Black IPA finishes semi-dry and easy drinking. RJT

12 oz. bottle. Six pack from a local grocery store. Poured a blackish/brown with a one finger beige head. Not much lace. Strong pine resin aroma with notes of licorice and earth. Heavy roasted malt on the flavor with bitter hop flavors vying for attention. Medium bodied with a bitter finish. Hop resin coats the tongue. Enjoyable.
