Shipyard Black IPA is for the pirate in you. This is a dark black beer that combines a rich malty character with the crisp flavor and aroma of American Northwest hops. Itís a beer the legendary Blackbeard would have hoisted as he sailed the seven seas. Itís worth walking the plank for!

Earthy aroma with hints of chocolate, a little coffee, and some citrus hops (really nice aroma), pours black, frothy, tan foam head with bubbles, thins out pretty fast, a mixture of light sweetness and bitterness that finishes bitter, average carbonation, thick and full bodied with what I now can see is a sticky finish (Iím new at this). Lacing I have never tried a black IPA and I am finding this a delicious way to root for Denver to beat Tom Brady and company. A really nice beer all around.

12 oz. can. Pours an opaque ebony with a lasting film of cream. Nose is char, dark chocolate, grapefruit, earthy caramel and a bit of evergreen resin. Flavors of orange chocolate, espresso, green apple and herby char. Medium body has too much carbonation but a good balance. One of the best uses of the overly-fruity Shipyard yeast yet.

12 oz bottle from a friend. Pour was non descript. While it appears to be a porter in the glass, the first smell directs you directly to black ipa. Subtle malt notes mingle nicely with the hops of the IPA. Chocolate and coffee notes are present but in the background Overall- a little thin.

From a bottle nice big black pour. Off white head. Smells a little like malty ipa. Very nice looking dark beer. Yes, a darker beer with ipa attributes. Long bitter linger in there, wew. That bitter linger builds with a crescendo during the session. Finish is likewise. Asa lager lover this is entertaining but cannot say its enjoyable.

Bottle. Dark cola brown, beige head. Sweet roasty aroma, hoppy undertones. Roasted and chocolate malts dominate the palate, fruity hops and light pine come in late, with moderate bitterness in the finish. Decent, maybe a bit thin.

12oz brown bottle. The pour is deep brown, some deep ruby highlighting. Beige foam, a creamy and pillowy bead. Nose presents dark chocolate, milder coffee tones and some west coast hops. Taste has big upfront roast, black coffee and chocolate. Citrus hops blend in. Bitterness is right about medium level, some raosty bitterness too. Aftertaste has roast and coffee. Thin bodied. Overall an enjoyable black IPA.

Bottle, another screw-top. Nose bitter and slightly rubbery black malt and roast with a cloying lining stuck behind. Hops are held back a bit. Pouts pitch with a soapy tan head. Taste lightly sweet and tart, very low bitterness, some tart and light roast, caramel, has the feeling of roast malt sprinkled on top afterward rather than considered thoughtfully as a base element. Thereís some PNW hopping here but minimal, just a hint f citrus sliding through on the bottom. Thin, flattish light-medium body, and mostly I ask myself "why?"

355ml bottle pours black in color with a finger and a half of light beige head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate with some citrus and light roasted grains. Taste is a light roasted grain and grapefruit hop bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness. Medium bodied with decent carbonation. A nicely crafted dark IPA which is refined and tasty. Recommended.

Pitch black pour with a tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is hard to pin down, mostly malts. Huge roasted malt flavour, also chocolates and espressos with a nice hoppy bite in the background. Tastes more like a light, toasty stout or a porter than an IPA but still very nice!

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on September 13, 2014. I have had this a few times but I am surprised I have not posted a review. The pour is dark brown but not quite black. Decent brown head. The aroma is more like a Porter than an IPA with a coffee and dark malt character. I donít get much in the way of hops considering it is supposedly an IPA. The body is medium to full. The taste has a modest dark malt and sweet note to start but there is a flood of earthy hops that play up on the rear.
