3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 yesyouam (1016) - Fairport, New York, USA - SEP 7, 2011
Shipyard Blue Fin Stout is a black ale with brown highlights and a brown head that quickly fades to the thin film and leaves decent lacing on the glass. It has an aroma of dark, roasted malt with a hint of sweetness. It’s pretty light bodied and a little sharp on the tongue. The finish is dry and a touch chalky. The flavor is very simple: dark roasted malt. It’s pretty dry and has a little hint of coffee at the finish. No hop flavor is detected and it doesn’t really have any noticeable bitterness, except perhaps at the finish. The roasted flavor lingers. It’s simple, roasty and sessionable. This is the kind of beer I like to use when cooking chili.

355 ml bottle drank at Bières et Compagnie (Terrebonne, Quebec), on September 1, 2011. Black, thin beige head. Aroma of chocolate malt, notes of anise légèrment acre. Taste slightly sweet anise, hints of chocolate and coffee bitter, bitter herbs and spices. Pretty solid stout, well done!
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 drowland (4992) - Jacksonville, Florida, USA - AUG 27, 2011
8/28/11. 12oz bottle. Opaque black pour with a giant dark brown head that cuts fats but doesn’t lace at all. Be careful, though, this head can get out of hand. A bit of an odd mix hits the nose: there’s coffee and chocolate, as well as roasted malts, as expected, but there is an overdose of sour and licorice as well. The flavor packs a definite chocolate and coffee flavor as well, but the coffee part is bitter and over-roasted, and there is another overly sour punch with a huge dose of club soda. The body is thin and the mouthfeel is super over carbonated. Huuuuge meh.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 otakuden (1616) - Vero Beach, Alabama, USA - AUG 24, 2011
Appearance: pours black with some impressive viscosity. Little to no head; what there is has hues of espresso crema which starts thin and disappears almost immediately. Swirls with a thin crema collar which disappears equally quick.
Nose: rooty and burnt, char and tar. Dark fruits are dense, meaty, and hearty. A tart nip in the back follows the dark fruits. Tobacco and burning cigars; the blackness of smoldering leaves, dry not green.
Palate: thinner in mouthfeel and body than nose implied. Sour tannins with grape and plum skins. All natural black root and licorice with dense dark fruits underneath. Bright finish atop the tongue. Root beer candies. Frothy thing mouthfeel is a bit distracting. Prune juice goes along with the thinner mouthfeel.
Final Thoughts: it smelled really good and tasted just okay. For such a rich nose, a rich body and palate should follow and it didn’t. I enjoyed it, just as not as much as I had hoped. For Shipyard though, a fine offering.

Bottle. It pours a more or less black body and a small, dense, dark beige head. Roasted, coffee-ish aroma with a touch of dark chocolate. Roasted, coffee-ish flavor too, also with some chocolate. Dry, full-bodied and quite pleasantly carbonated. Lasting roasted finish. Although a bit one dimensional, it’s a pleasant and tasteful beer I won’t shy away from drinking again. 110819
