Again dry stouts are just not for me...and this one is not even a good representation of the style. Very "plain Jane" aroma and flavor. As expected you get some choc notes but this one just is way to dry and bitter. And the mouthfeel is very water.

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2006 Nitro... Mellow Mushroom, Tampa... Pitch black ale with a mid-sized, ultra creamy, khaki head. Incredible retention. Smoky, chocolaty aroma. Well-balanced flavor with plenty of cocoa and vanilla... leans just slightly toward the sweet side. Medium to full-bodied and velvety with soft carbonation. Finishes chocolaty and lightly bitter. Dumbed down a bit from the nitrogen, but that’s not the beer’s fault. Surprisingly good!

Poured a dark black color with an averaged sized, light brown head. Subtle aromas of chocolate and roasted malts. Light coffee in the taste.

Surprisingly decently drinking stout . Pours black with malt in aroma. Balanced, and not as dry, and decent balance of roast and malt and a bit of chocolate, all at sessionable ABV. Bottle..finished before lunch begins.

Dark black beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is quite roasty and cocoaish. Fresh roasty maltiness with a light espresso finish. Fresh cocoa and light roast over a lean maltiness. Simple tasty dry stout.

12 ounce bottle from State Line Liquors, opened 3/15/11. Pours a very dark brown color with a thin tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, sweet caramel notes and a nutty note. The taste is roasted malts, sunflower seeds and tart fruits that seem like they’re not supposed to be there. Thin bodied.

Bottle. Very dark brown with red tints and a diminishing head. Aromas are raisins and blackberry with molasses and dark cherry. Earthy coffee with treacle and light liquorice and cola. Flavours are dark berries with coffee, cola and chocolate. Molasses with bitter lemon and medicinal notes. Dry on the finish. Decent.

Bottle. To be honest the only reason that I bought this is that BJCP lists this as a classic example of the style (and BYO just had an issue on stouts). Pours with a deep brown near black body and a medium deep tan head. Aromas of chocolate, leather, dried/dark fruit, coffee. Restrained roast. Molasses and brown sugar, but not sweet. Vanilla and egg yolks. Flavor of roast, earth, brown sugar, coffee, chocolate, and twigs. Flavor falls off quickly. A decent beer at the end of the day (especially for Shipyard). Somewhat lively, but also somewhat thin. Decent example of a not particularly exciting style (for my palate).
