At 13+% alcohol, of course the aroma and flavor are "boozy". But everything is pleasant. Delicious beyond expectations. I know shipyard gets a bad rap, and I’ve always been a big fan of the Export but little else. This is the first barrel-aged offering I’ve tried from them, and it is exceptional.

Draft at the Bistro West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Festival. Pours very dark orange brown with a large foamy beige head. Aromas of light pitted fruit and dark pitted fruit. Good amount of bourbon/vanilla with fruit for flavor. Quite excellent.

Pours a one finger khaki head that fades quickly to a ring leaving some lace. Cloudy brown color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Bourbon nose. Flavor is bourbon and dark fruit, with a mild alcohol burn. Nice double ESB. Bottle #185, caged and corked 750ml from Madden Beverage Saco, ME.

On tap at Bistro BA Fest poured a clear amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of bourbon, carmel, toffee, mint, oak, light vanilla and light fruittiness. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, toffee, fruittiness, bourbon, light mint and light oak with a crisp dry lingering minty bourbon finish.

Sample pour at The Ale and the Witch. Nose is healthy bourbon, boozy, vanilla, smooth caramel malt. Very nice and intense. Flavor is smooth and sharp, all at once. Bourbon and boozy up front with vanilla and oakiness. Smooth malt character follows through nicely. Little to no lacing at all. Not bad overall.

On tap at barrel aged festival. Really bitter had a huge booze taste. Is nice and bitter. Aroma was oak.

Pours a nice copper color with a khaki head. Nose is sweet bourbon, vanilla, and toffee. Hints of chocolate, toasted bread, and some floral hops. Light oak, raisin, and alcohol on the finish. Excellent sweetness to the flavor. Bourbon, vanilla, toffee, chocolate, and caramel. Slightly nutty, some dark fruits, mild alcohol, and very subtle hops.

On tap at The Bistro BA Festival. Pours amber with a thin beige head and a whiskey and fruit aroma. There is a fruit and vanilla flavor with a lot of whiskey.

On tap at the Livermore Saloon. It pours a dark orange/amber color with a nice orange head. The aroma has a lot of bourbon, hot alcohol, plums and raisins. The flavor is fruity with some intense alcohol burn, bourbon notes, caramel, raisins and a bitter finish. Not bad. One of the better Shipyard beers I’ve had. Pretty hot though.

750ml bottle, thanks to radarsock. 2012 bottle, #341. Hazy dark red / orange color. Good thin bubbly off-white / khaki head. Lots of dots of lace. Bourbon, woody vanilla nose. Pretty hot in the finish, light bitter. Good caramel malt base, light bitter fruity hops in there, but a lot of bourbon / spicier wood warmth. Tasty bourbon wood hop aftertaste, but a bit of a bite right now. Would have liked to save it for longer, what with the purported "infinite shelf-life", but curiosity prevailed, and New Year’s seemed like a good occasion for tasting
