Double Old Thumper is the big brother of the British Grand Champion beer Old Thumper Extra Special Ale, which was created in 1979 by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England, and brewed in the United States solely by Shipyard. Shipyard¹s Master Brewer Alan Pugsley trained at the Ringwood Brewery before moving to the United States 25 years ago. Double Old Thumper was created by Pugsley and has 11.2% alcohol by volume. "Despite its strength, this beer is a great example of balance between malt and hops lending to a surprising drinkability," noted Pugsley. Double Old Thumper has a brilliant deep copper hue and spicy hop aroma with a complex malty finish featuring a dry Simcoe Hop bite. This beer pairs well with short ribs, lamb, hearty stews, and casseroles. When Pugsley was brewing Old Thumper at Ringwood Brewery in the 1980s it was considered a very strong ale and, by English standards, it still is. "When we started brewing Old Thumper under license at Shipyard in 1994 it was considered strong in the United States too," Pugsley continued. "Double Old Thumper is literally twice the strength, twice the grist, and twice the hops of Old Thumper and, today, is considered strong and Old Thumper is just of average drinking strength. It¹s a funny old world!" In homage to Old Thumper, the package features an illustration of two of the famous Ringwood boars heads. Bottle. Clear amber colour with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, raisin. Flavour is dark fruit, caramel, but with a strong taste of alcohol. Might win on some more age, as it is the alcohol is a bit to dominant.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass the first time I had it and the second time I had it I opted for a chalice due to some preconceived notions. Here’s my take from the chalice. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange to brown color with a half finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light speckled lacing here and there. The smell had a decent blend of roasty sweet coffee to caramel to toffee. There’s some light chocolate even going on as it warms. The taste took all of those previously mentioned flavors and blended them fairly well. On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Uh-oh, sessionable Barleywine, hmmmm....well okay, I guess. Overall, everything seems to be in place to be a pretty good beer until the palate/mouthfeel gets examined. Honestly, it’s just an okay beer.

Bottle share thanks to beechner224. Hazy amber color with white head. Caramel and light toffee malt notes, light boozy character. Much the same in the flavor,it’s of caramel malt character and some light booziness.

bottleshare thanks to Beechner224. Aroma is a butter funk malt. Taste is tart, harsh, grainy, weirdness. A light alcohol burn. Bad stuff.

Cask at the Shipyard Brewhaus on Peak Island. Served in a full shaker. Copper color. Light sweetness and mild hops. Makes me think of a brown ale more than a barleywine. The flavor is ok but I doubt it is 11%. Nice lacing head.

Shared bomber, pint glass. Murky brown. Sweet malty, biscuit nose. A bit of a sweet, sticky malt bomb. Would probably be better with food.

Pours a rusty brown. The aroma mostly consists of caramel, toffee, coffee and alcohol. Overly bitter and unbalanced

Riktigt trevlig.

From bottle, courtesy of John C. Mild hoppy note, sweet malt and light alcohol, raisins and biscuit. Dark amber hazy with off-white foamy lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Pretty bitter throughout with biscuit and caramel notes. Bitter finish. Not bad but not one I’d seek out on a regular basis.
