COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

A 6.9 percenter. Pours a nice dark tangerine colour with a white head that dissipates quickly to a thin surface head. Leaves some light lacing on the glass when drunk. On the nose I’m getting less citrus than I expected. Some mint, some leafy greens, a hint of caramel and some tea. On the palate, definitely more tea. A very slight bitterness on the swallow. Hoppy dryness. No sweetness. I’d buy this again.

A nice dark amber body with a beige head that had excellent retention and nice lace. Nice caramel malts. Mostly grapefruit hops on the nose, there was a mix of pine and floral qualities. There was also a hint of baby powder. Flavor had good balance the grapefruit hops were restrained and the pine hops were firm enough. A nice bitterness in the aftertaste. A nice dry finish.

BITTER. The ibu’s in this beer really stand out, and man that aftertaste is strong. Now I usually like my beers on the strong side, but monkey fist is damn near unpalatable. Will not drink again

From tap. A nice hazy amber in glass. Aroma is floral hops. Creamy palate. Lingering bitterness. Taste is single dimensional.

This poured hazy and darker orange with a fat head of off white foam that fell slowly enough and left some lace. Nose is pungent and bitter herbs with some dankness like marijuana. It had some sweet lemon peel very deep within it but the stiff herbal was dominant in the nose. The malt came across with a little sweetness in the nose and some nuttiness as it warmed . Bit of orange finally came out and some muted earthy pine.

Taste is bitter and grassy, pungent herbal with only a faint touch of spice. The dominant fruit is grapefruit and the pine is earthy and muted. Earthy all the way with some grapefruit pith and bitter, the rind of that fruit and some tart citrus overall. The malt never realized a significant caramel sweetness but did offer a bit of nutty flavor that seemed sour to me. There is orange but only as the beer warms quite a bit. The mouthfeel is good. A nice bit of malt to give some moderate mouthfeel, good carbonation to tickle and excite the palate and a bit of hop oil and resin to coat the palate . There is a bitter on this that is actually medium but appears pretty sharp because there is not any sweetness to contrast it.

This IPA had a balanced approach to it’s body that was noticeable. The malt did it’s best to stand firm against the powerful hops character but the hops won.

Little fruity. Big malty. Kinda tinny. Not very good but typical shipyard, not a very good brewery

Bottle - dark yellow/copper color with an average head. This has to be one of the earthiest tasting hoppy beers I’ve ever tried. Very earthy up front and somewhat malty on the back end. Medium mouthfeel. Very good and I’m looking forward to the next one.

12oz bottle from I Like That, Portsmouth, NH. Amber with a loose white head; piney aroma; soft in the mouth with citrus and piney hops; and a dry acrid finish. How come that every brewery in New England claims to have uniquely discovered this style?

Pours an attractive copper color with small head. Nose typical of IPA: floral, citrus and pine. Taste has some citrus up front but quickly moves to a bitter hop bite...with the bitterness really lingering. Normally I like the bitterness but this is not all that well balanced. Could use more citrus up front, and less of an aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
