COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

341 ml bottle. Pours a lightly veiled pale amber with a short lived beige head. Aroma is hops, caramel. Flavor is caramel, fruity, brown sugar, cream sugar. Finish is a bit of citrus, but generally lackluster. Medium body, average carbonation. Easy drinking, and light, felt more like an american pale ale.

Can: Poured a deep amber color ale with a relatively large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of bitter citrus hops with dry caramel malt notes. Taste is also dominated by dry and bitter hops with light citrus and earthy notes with some dry caramel malt notes also noticeable. Body is average with good carbonation. Not bad bit a bit too strong on the bitterness front. I think this would have been a great IPA back in 2006.

Pours a dirty gold with a small white head. Aroma is spent grains and lemon. Taste is a different hop bitterness than I’m used to. Lemon and citrus hops with some grassy notes and grain balance.

Bottle. Big up front hops and a very different beer for Shipyard. I guess this is their take on a West Coast. IPAs are not my favorite style and as I got to the end the flavor changed and wasn’t as good. As it warmed up a bit of alcohol came through.
