Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

Tap. Like most of Shipyard’s beers, they are using some variety of hops that adds a very stiff bitterness to this beer. Luckily it mellowed after the first few sips as my tongue adjusted to it. There were some mild citrus flavors up front and a strong wave of malt after that. The bitterness lingered somewhat .

473 mL can from LCBO served cool in a tulip glass. Murky copper with a full orange-tan head. Acetaldehyde and boiled celery, British malts beneath that mess, little else. Medium body, relaxed effervescence. Acetaldehyde and celery again, a little dry, British malt, slightly floral, not good; dry with moderate bitterness and a dry caramel and acetaldehyde finish. Fail.

Not overly hoppy so it went well with my thanksgiving day turkey. I would definitely drink this again.

Cloudier brew with amber colour and a fine bubbled cream coloured head. The aroma immediately strikes me as different with a spicy almost lemon herb like aroma. There is that citrusy hoppy structure with a slightly caramel note but that spicy herbal note with a hint of apple cider I find strange. On the palate it is bitter and has a leafy hoppy note but I can’t shake that apple cider like flavour that I can’t quite describe. Different and I respect that but not a classic.

enjoyed a pint of this while listening to big pimpin from jay Z and tupacs californacation. Made it taste a lot better, also Uconn won the game.

can. Poured hazy dark amber with a moderate frothy off-white head. Spicy herbal hop aroma with a little citrus. Medium body, average carbonation with a creamy mouthfeel that finishes with a high tart bitterness. Caramel malt with pine and peppery hop flavours.

Pours a slight hazy amber with a medium lasting beige head, mild lacing. Citrus and floral aroma with some sweet caramel malt, yeast and mildly fruity notes. Taste same as aroma with good bitterness on the end. Palate is a medium body, moderate carbonation. Finish has a good caramel malt character, yeast, mild fruity notes with a citrus floral hops bitterness on the end. Overall a good showing, decently balanced and good drinking.

Pours orange with an off white head. Citric and flowery aroma. The flavor has floral and citric hops with sweet malts and toffee. Just a hint of diacetyl, but not bad.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2013 (Bottle). Compliments of Craig. Slightly hazy copper complexion with thick white head and lots of lacing. The flavor is a traditional English IPA, malt balanced and well hopped without overwhelming the flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
