COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

473ml can. Pours a hazy rose tinged pale orange with a beige head. Heavy aromas of grapefruit, with strong green tea notes, caramel, and a very light aroma of what reminds me of paint thinner. As for taste, big tropical fruit up front with some resinous notes, that lead into a very harsh bitterness, and alcohol burn that ends the beer with lemon candy, and a long bitter citrus pith finish.

Draught at the brewpub in Orlando. Amber colour with a white head. Aroma and flavour of hops, fruit, malt and spicy notes.

471ml can from the LCBO Pours a deep hazy amber with a finger width off white head. Nose is heavy pine with quite a pit of fruit: citrus and pear and something else. Quite bitter to start with some balanced malt sweetness in the middle and a lingering bitter finish. Quite like the level of bitterness, but there is an underlying metallic tang that distracts. Mouth is quite soft with soft carbonation. Interesting...

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a cloudy orange-copper with a large lasting foamy off-white head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of fruity and resiny hops, bready malt, light spices and alcohol. Flavour’s the same, with fruity hops, spices, bready malt, a bit of alcohol and a hint of wood. Long bitter finish. Average bodied. Not great but pretty good.

Slightly hazy amber pour, with a medium white head. Some weird sweet ctrus aromas, mixed with wet cardboard. Weird bitter lemon, and dried hay. Good god this is odd. Low carb, soft mouth feel. Finish lacks the sweetness that was in the aroma. Its quite bitter, with a big citrus pithy finish. This is an odd ball ipa. The hops are there seem to have mingled with odd off flavors.

Can from the LCBO. Slightly hazy golden-copper with a small white head. Really unique hop profile in the aroma and flavour - oddly dank, but also fruity, with mango and blackcurrant notes. A bit of fermented apple character as well. Caramel-leaning malt supports. Finish is long and fruity, some slightly tart citrus notes and more of the blackcurrant. Not quite sure what to make of this...

from a can from the LCBO, liked the label, and I like IPA’s. pours a nice cloudy amber, good nose. first sip, citrusy, good hops. head lingers nicely. ABV is too high, tasty enough to drink a few, but @ 6.9 not often good not great, if you want to bring some over go right a head

Tap. Like most of Shipyard’s beers, they are using some variety of hops that adds a very stiff bitterness to this beer. Luckily it mellowed after the first few sips as my tongue adjusted to it. There were some mild citrus flavors up front and a strong wave of malt after that. The bitterness lingered somewhat .

473 mL can from LCBO served cool in a tulip glass. Murky copper with a full orange-tan head. Acetaldehyde and boiled celery, British malts beneath that mess, little else. Medium body, relaxed effervescence. Acetaldehyde and celery again, a little dry, British malt, slightly floral, not good; dry with moderate bitterness and a dry caramel and acetaldehyde finish. Fail.
