COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

12oz bottle from I Like That, Portsmouth, NH. Amber with a loose white head; piney aroma; soft in the mouth with citrus and piney hops; and a dry acrid finish. How come that every brewery in New England claims to have uniquely discovered this style?

Pours an attractive copper color with small head. Nose typical of IPA: floral, citrus and pine. Taste has some citrus up front but quickly moves to a bitter hop bite...with the bitterness really lingering. Normally I like the bitterness but this is not all that well balanced. Could use more citrus up front, and less of an aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

RedSox2004 (1384) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - FEB 26, 2014
Clear orange amber with a two-finger bright white head and nice lace. Aromas of bright citrus hops, bready malt and hints of pine and pear. Flavor is mostly citrus - grapefruit and lemon - offset quickly by biscuit and caramel malt sweetness. Light to medium body, soft carbonation and mouthfeel, and a lingering dry bitterness.

Pour is a amber with a large white head. Aroma is a nice mix of piney hops and caramel malts. Flavor is more of a herbal hop with a hefty malt presence. Finish is dry with a decent hop resin left on the tongue. Not as sweet as I though it would be. This is a solid IPA. Plenty of hop presence and a fairly heavy malt to back it up.

Slightly reddish with a thin white head. Nose is a touch musty. Taste is nicely balanced malty sweetness and hop bite. Medium body. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This IPA poured a cloudy, light amber colour with a nice foamy, bright white head. Scents include Grass, celery, plastic and oil based paint. First swig was quite strong on the IBU’s. Flavours of hops, light caramel and paint. Finish is fruit juice and grassy hops.

Cannette de 473ml. Bière cuivrée avec une superbe mousse légèrement beige. Un nez de savon. Une bouche de caramel et de métal avec une amertume. Rien de spécial et rien de mauvais.

Hazy copper with a thin white fading cap. Nose is like musty sweet earthy hops, a touch of strong toffee sweetness, and something along the lines of bourbon. And a nose of lemon zest as well. Taste is dry and leafy, pretty mild and earthy. Strong bitterness without a lot of depth or character. Kinda bland on that front. Not too big a fan.

A - pours a medium copper colour with a 2 inch, off white head which lasts forever. leaves patchy lacing along the side of the glass (mostly at the top). shows low carbonation. S - moderately yeasty, sweet smelling, passionfruit, red berries, red licorice, tropical citrusy fruits, malty caramel, baked bread, pear, a little resiny as it warms T - lemony citrus & grapefruit, caramel and fresh bready malt, some earthy hops, licorice tasting (reminds me of twizzlers), slightly medicinal taste hits me every once and a while, there’s something just a little strange about this beer that I can’t seem to put my finger on it...it definitely has some good flavours but something is throwing it off. M - light to medium body, soft carbonation, some alcohol present. sweet when it hits the tongue and has an extremely quick and harsh shift to the bitterness of the hops. initially creamy & medium sweet, which quickly changes to bitter, and finishes with a harsh bitterness and dry. slightly astringent on the finish as well. O - a drinkable beer, but there was something a little off about it. maybe it’s just my taste, as it was quite difficult for me to pick out what it was that was bothering me. it looks great off the pour but didn’t quite live up to the aesthetics this time. it did have an overly red licorice smell and taste which i couldn’t seem to get out of my head. it’s an interesting attempt at the IPA, and while I wouldn’t go out of my way to seek this one out again, I may give it another try down the road if the time is right Serving type: bottle
