Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Chinook and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

Pours an amber from a tap, good fruity piney Cascade aroma, classic bitterness with a little fruity sweetness as well. Good beer.

A shiny red can bought at the SAQ. Pours a clear strong golden (light copper?) with a small white head that leaves nice lacing. Nose is of caramel and resin, not too fragrant but still not too bad. Taste is moderately sweet and bitter, lightly grainy. Hop flavors are a bit earthy, a bit piny. Not that exciting, really. Body is medium, carbonation moderately and mouthfeel slightly oily. Overall your standard "old style" IPA, not that good but I’m glad the SAQ is adding to their beer offering.

From the tap the aroma is sharp but very light ale hard to capture the aroma fully in a pint glass, the pour is clear and a dark amber to almost brown, taste is sharp very hoppy and bitter, there is a grapefruit hint to the finish but only the sour of the grapefruit no distinguishable sweetness, over a strong ipa but a funky after flavor

Good lacing. Slightly medeciny taste. Bitter, but not as much aroma as I would like.

12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a darker, hazy copper with a white head of foam that sticks around. The aroma has notes of crackers, pine, green tea. The taste is moderately bitter with a drying finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Solid IPA.

35 cl bottle. Dark orange color, cloudy, thick creamy offwhite head. Hoppy nose, tingy. Aroma of citrus and caramel malts with resin hops, ginger, roots, earthy yeast and tobacco. Strong bitter taste, long bitter dry finish, raw and earthy.

pours a clear copper with a frothy and persistent off white head. Epic head and lacing! Aroma is pleasant floral, more floral than citrus. The taste is good bitter. Hoppy, but again, not real citrusy. Long bitter finish. Good beer!

Bottle from ABC. Pours a dark amber with a thin to medium white head. Lacing is minimal. Aromas are grass, pine, citrus. Taste follows suit but also with some vague malts - mostly bread. Mouthful is surprisingly full with a really oily texture and a long finish. Acquire.

Tap. Pours crystal clear amber, medium creamy beige head, good lacing. Aroma is light line and grapefruit. Flavor is similar, light sweet, medium bitter, pine and grapefruit, touch of caramel backbone. A bit harsh on the end. Basically what american IPAs were fifteen years ago.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2015 Draught. Pours deep amber with big clingy white head. Mild hoppy nose is matched by rather boring, slightly skunky taste. Underwhelming hoppinessess. This is on my don’t-get-again list.
