Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Chinook and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

Bottle shared at Mosto, Matera. Pours hazy amber with an off white head. Aroma of caramel malt upfront, with grapefruit, pine and resinous hops. Flavor is moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

2014-09-03. Hazy copper body, large creamy foamy beige head. 3++ Aroma is sweet, caramel malty core with citrus accents. Flavour is similar, base is quite sweet, caramel notes, fruity lemony hop citrus notes crest then fade behind the malt. Smooth average plus bodied palate, soft carbonation. Light on the tongue the alcohol manages to leave a light warming impression behind nonetheless. Enjoyable but not enough hops for what I am looking for in an IPA, even accounting for some fading over time. Okay. Can from the LCBO, Toronto

This brew is not too hoppy, which I like. Only had one but could have easily drank more which is unusual for me...not being a very big fan of IPA’s.

Pours ruby with thick white head. Aroma of citrus, conifer and a bit of wet dog. Tastes of the same, with some alcohol and honey, as well. Sweet and alcoholic aftertaste.

Can - 473ml. Beautiful hazy golden/orange body with an average white foamy head. Well balanced hoppy taste with malty, citrusy, and some yeasty hints. Its sharp hoppy taste carries malty, pineapple, grapefruit and some orange notes. Ends with a long, robust bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Drank from the bottle. Aroma is comprised of orange, pine, caramel malt, pine, and a slight grassy smell. Taste is focused on the orange citrus and is backed up by a nice malt backbone, but it is a little metallic. The brew is bitter throughout. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation and sticky mouth feel.

Got a good laugh out of the review below that seemed to give this beer a crap rating simply because it’s an IPA. Now, I may be a little biased, seeing as half my reviews are of APAs/IPAs, but I don’t see anything to dislike about this beer. The beer looks great: nice colour, nice creamy cap, great lacing. The nose is probably its best feature: caramel, orange, grapefruit, pine, a bit of flowers. Taste is a really nice mix of sweet and bitter, not overly dry on the finish, but with a nice lingering piney bitterness. Decent creamy, fizzy mouthfeel. More than drinkable.

Can from the LCBO, shared with my Dad. A dark copper color with a thick beige head of foam that has good staying power & lacing. A really good hop aroma: floral fruity hop notes with solid caramel. A balanced flavor of caramel, lemon, resin dankness and pine sap. Quite bitter with a floral lemony finish. Solid

From a twist off top bottle. Smells like big dull Ipa. Look is darker orange brown. Big thick rototilling palate of viscous bitter hoppy BS. Why is everything IPA today? Not everybody who likes beers likes IPA. There you have it.
