COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear light amber with a slight beige head. Aroma just about suggests cat pee. Med body. There’s a lot of caramel for backbone, but it’s just about overwhelmed by a complex and strong mix of hop. I’m voting for at least resin and grapefruit rind. But I think there’s some floral mixed in. This is pretty hoppy stuff for a Right Coast IPA.

Draft… Mostly clear orange ale with a small, creamy, white head. Good retention. The bouquet is both fruity and resiny – peach, pineapple and a mild trace of pine. Medium to full-bodied with tingly carbonation. The flavor presents a substantial, fruity, rindy bitterness. Mildly bitter, tongue-numbing finish.

Bottle poured a hazy amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, grapefruit, pine and orange zest. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, earthiness and light grapefruit with a crisp dry lingering bitter finish.

Pours a clear orange color with a tall off-white head. The nose is grassy and a touch vegetal. Not off to a good start. Some sweet malt in the form of bread and toffee. Light citrus peel on the finish. The flavor is also somewhat vegetal and grassy. Fairly bitter, a touch of metal, and some bread. Straw, light toffee, and some toasted malt. Really just an unimpressive hop profile and beer.

12 ounce bottle from Total Wine West Richmond. Pours a hazy amber color with a large frothy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of bitter citrus and herbal hops. The taste is bitter citrus and resin hops. Faint caramel malt backbone. Medium bodied. Decent.
