COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

22oz bomber pours clear copper with near white head. The aroma has some vague resiny hops, a bit of fruity raisin esteriness and then that house yeast nearly butterscotch note. The house yeast doesn’t work here for me. The taste is similar as I get hops that are vague and bitter and a bit resiny mixed with the house yeast buttered bread and butterscotch. Didn’t not really like this one. The yeast or maybe it is an off note, just doesn’t work.

The beer pours a translucent burnt orange with a light tan coloured head. The aroma is grapefruit, pine, and caramel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average mouthfeel. The flavour is caramel, grapefruit, and pine.

Warm amber in color, with a white fizzy head. Huge amount of citrus and piney notes in the nose. Tons of cascade flavor. Spicy finish.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Pours clear, copper, medium off white head and very nice lacing on the glass. Nose is hoppy, some malt notes and some citrus fruit too. Taste is nice and bitter, some balance from malts, dry finish. Nothing over the top, but a nice solid IPA, not bad at all.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark copper body under a one finger fizzy beige head that faded to a thin film. The nose is pretty typical of a hoppy Shipyard beer, loads of sweet caramel and crystal malt, but at least there’s a fair amount of citrusy hops in here. Still, not really a great combo for the style as far as my tastes go. The flavor pretty well mirrors the aroma, tons of awful crystal malt dominating the flavor. I hate heavy crystal malt in an IPA. A decently bitter and citrusy hoppiness, but no matter how many hops they dumped in here, it can’t make up for a poor malt bill. Medium bodied, sticky and clingy, fizzy carbonation. Pretty bad IPA based on what I like.

Not a bad IPA, but the IBU's are not felt as a true IPA should be. Refreshing, not that bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can - Caramel malts and light earthy hops. Clear copper with a rich white head. Caramel, pine and light bitterness. Nice and mellow, quite drinkable.

Bottle (and not long ago, from a Supercan as well). Hazy copper with amber highlights. Caramel malt dominates with some citrus hops flirting on the palate, but not enough hoppy aromatics to make me happy. A rather minimalist IPA.

Transfer from BA review on 4-15-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep amber color with a two finger head of an off white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is big of a grapefruit citrus hop, mixed with some tropical fruit aromas of tangerine and mango, giving a nice fruity aroma to the brew. Along with these smells are some cracker smells as well as a bit of a grassy and earthy smell, which mix with the fruity aromas to produce a quite nice smelling IPA overall. Taste – The taste begins with a rather drier bready flavor mixed with a bit of a grassy and earthy hop as well as some flavors of a tropical fruit nature. The tropical fruits are heaviest of a tangerine flavor with a bit of a papaya and mango mixed within. The sweet flavors decrease as the flavor advances with some light caramel taking their place. With the transitioning of the sweet, so too comes some changes with the hop flavors. While some grassy and earthy hop are present upfront, these are lost rather quickly at the expense of a moderately bitter grapefruit taste. The grapefruit really dominates the end of the taste profile, with it leaving a rather bitter citrus flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. A bit more carbonation may have been nice for the big blast of unbalanced grapefruit citrus hop that hits the tongue at the end of the taste, but while this may be so, the nice chewiness was good for upholding all the more subtle flavors at the front of the taste, producing an overall decent feel for the flavors of the brew. Overall – A decent IPA overall with a mostly grapefruit citrus taste that seems to linger far after the beer has been swallowed. Nothing super fantastic, but still rather easy drinking and likely deserving of a better rating then most give ( at least in my interpretation of the brew).

12oz brown bottle. Lightly hazy orange coloured brew, small creamy white cap. The nose has orange and grapefruit hops.Taste has a bit of caramel, grapefuit and orange peels - pretty fresh and zesty. Bitter finish, lingering grapefruit and citrus peels. A simple IPA, pretty good overall, an easy drinker.
