COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Monkey Fist IPA is the genesis of a new generation of IPA. The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier, and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist holds up to the spiciest foods or is delicious savored just on its own. And, in case you didn’t know, a Monkey Fist is the knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Cheers!

12oz bottles. Aroma is grassy hops that dissipate. Taste is hops and malt, finish is clear. Not bad at all, nothing really distinctive.

Hazy golden color with a short white head. Hard candy and floral bouquet. Medium body and wet. Very bitter, given the bouquet.

From a bottle at a bar. Strong, aggressive taste of hops. Would be better if a bit softer.

Bottle:   Fiery amber, small to moderate white frothy head, decent lacing.   Semi-sweet pithy nose.   Similar tongue, citrus peel and pith.   Seems a bit astringent in that the acidity seems high.   Super citrus peel is how I would describe it.   Mild sweetness, but not enough.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Tiz okay, but its a little rough around the edges.

Bottle at home. Amber pour. The aroma is orange, pine, floral, strawberry. Full bodied, the flavor is pine, caramel, orange, sweet dough. Long and bitter finish.

Draft at Sea Dog Brewing in Orlando. Amber/copper with a thick white head. This is bitter and hoppy with a strong pine character with a little bit of grapefruit joining in. The body is medium-to full, oily, with some sticky malt. The finish is dry and a bit grainy. This is one of the better beers I’ve had from Shipyard/Sea Dog.

Bold ipa with a deep copper color. Foam light but thick. Strong hop, but has full body and flavor. Was great with spicy Cajon pasta

12oz bottle from ABC on Betton. Orange pour with a thin light tan head and good retention. Aroma is floral, candied sugar, caramel. Taste is more of the same - little biscuity, grapefruit, light spices. Moderately bitter. Oily texture.

Not a very good IPA. The malts and the hops clash terribly, big let down on this beer. Head is good, two finger. Nice copper color, and pretty nice lacing. The biggest let down is just the taste. This beer is just a sub-standard IPA all around. It’s almost not an IPA, although I’m not sure what I would call it. Starts off with a strong malty taste then abruptly ends and finishes with a gross, grasses, moldy hop taste. FAIL Shipyard.

355ml bottle from The Beer Cellar. Floral and pine needle aromas abound and fill the nose, along with a it hint of musk. Sweet ad inviting aroma leads you into a big bodied beer with resinous flavours and a long hoppy finish. Orange in colour with a good sized head.
