marcus (1826), Sacramento, California, USA Jan 26, 2008 This brown ale poured with a thin tan head, eliciting a spicy aroma. The flavor is heavily spiced roasted malt, with sharp bitter finish. Some vegetable flavors are detectable. Beershine (2678), Hue, Vietnam Jan 25, 2008 Updated: Feb 25, 2008Pours deep amber color with small short-lasting head but really cool lace. Aroma is weakly spiced with some soured notes. Flavors are nuanced, with a lingering hop finish that welcomes the next sip. Spices detectable include mainly cinnamon and nutmeg. Mouthfeel is highly carbonated but soft and creamy. Were it not for the off-notes in the smell I’d really like this.

(re-rate from Hallandale beer fest, also bottle)
Hazy purplish-brown. Smell is middle of the road mild malt. Not bad flavors: clean, malty but dry, a touch of salt, hoppy afterbit and a little alcohol in the finish. A little too fizzy. ShawnMalloy (119), Auburn, Massachusetts, USA Jan 23, 2008 Pours a dark orange. Aroma of fresh vegetables? Starts lightly malty and finishes with a spicy hop influence. It’s a nice seasonal offering. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 21, 2008 On tap at BJ’s in Pinellas FLA. Decent leathery aroma. Nice lacing on the glass. Perhaps a little darker than the typical pale yellow american lager. Oily soapy mouth coating feel to the palate. Slight whiskey flavors in the background. Taste is somewhat like chewing on leather, it carries over from the aroma. Not bad but a little too much alky in the personality. Terrible bitter linger, good example of the style. gsmitty80 (628), Washington DC, USA Jan 20, 2008 Poured much lighter than i had imagined it would. Had the aroma and taste of white school chalk, very unpleasant. The alcohol is stated at 6.8 but it didn’t taste very alcoholic at all. Didn’t have high expectations and it met them if that makes any sense at all. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA Jan 18, 2008 12 oz bottle from Hi-Time Cellar. Nice copper pour, aroma is toasty caramel bready malt. A malt forward design, with enough bitter to balance, in fact overall balance is the strong suit here, with mouth feel and finish just about perfect. I like this beer, I’ll have another. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jan 13, 2008 Bomber purchase at Countryside Liquors in Clearwater, FL. Pours clear copper with a nice half inch tan head. The aroma has a sense of urgency as notes of roasted malts, toffee malts, melodeon malts, bread and a mixture of earthiness and pine hops rush to my senses. The taste begins with a mildly tart and bitter combination of malt astringency and pine hops. The flavor grows into a roasted maltiness along with toffee, earthiness and hints of burnt malts. The pine hop bitterness seems to be there from beginning to end but I really like the way the maltiness comes together in the finish and into the after taste. I do get a faint sense of oxidation in both the nose and taste that just takes away a bit from the experience. Strykzone (1459), Wood River, Illinois, USA Jan 13, 2008 As pleasant aroma as and English Strong Ale will offer. Sweet malt with dark fruit fills the nose. Bitterness hits early in the sip, hides as sweet fruit and chocolate take over, and returns to a slow fade. There is also a mild hop effect and the alcohol warming is marginal.
