Shipyard Prelude Ale

Kindy of has a minty flavor to it somehow. Stong aspects of pine and maltiness some fruit and brown sugar flavors too. Overall - a good beer.

what a tasty treat. its hard to find this where i live. to me, its something to look forward to every year like most seasonal brews. quite bitter and has a pleasant appearance and flavor.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber with almost no head. Nose is malt laden. Flavor is malt dominated with almost no hops. Sweet, but still the malts make you take notice. Very lightly carbonated. A bitter finish completes the taste. A bomber with the leftover brew still in the refrigerator. I’m not sure if I really want to revisit this one

22oz bottle. About 9 months old at consumption. Pours a dark copper color with a white foamy head. Nose is very malty and lots of caramel, light hop hint. Palate is syrupy carbonated. Flavor is that of an awful after dinner mint, the kind that has the chocolate coating, except this didnt have the chocolate coating, just the awful mint center. Hints of caramel and sweet malt were also found, but the mint stood out the most. Finish was a bit heavy on the sugar and syrup.

Bottle. Pours brown, with medium head, and has caramel and malty overtones in aroma. Flavor is similar, with a sugar taste, and has a thin finish. Not bad for shipyard.

Initially looks great ... clear reddish chestnut brown with a huge yellow to tan head with huge bubbles that burst audibly. Head vanishes too fast, leaving only a trace of lacing. Toffee and some strangely sweet fruit ... strawberries or cherries? A bit thin in the mouth for a winter ale, not especially hoppy, maybe a little ginger spice that no one else seems to be commenting on. // Has gotten worse in the past half year. Does not age well. Nasty finish. And yeah after the finish is gone there is an artificial minty after after taste. Into the sink it goes.

Looks a bit like a Marzen. Reddish brown hue. Crystal clear. Bubbles in the slightly tan head are too big...this head won’t be lasting long. Actually, by the time I had taken a sip the head was almost gone. Might be ok for this style though. Thin wisp of head has remained thru the beer but no brussels lace. I like the aroma of this beer. Slight hint of the alcohol its hiding within. Slightly malty and fruity. I get a sense of strawberries, maybe prunes. First sip is very bitter, more bitter than I expected... thats my first impression. Needs to warm up, the maltiness hasn’t blossomed yet. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, bit astringent on the tongue. Sweetness of the beer matches up well with the aroma, but not as malty as I thought it would be. I’m getting essence of hazelnuts with roasted coffee. As it warms up, the true personality of the beer comes out. Bitterness subsides a bit and the alcohol sweetness shines thru. Very prevelent on the tip of the tongue. Aftertaste is roasted malt on the sides and back of tongue with a full track of bitterness down the center/back of the tongue. Overall: Beer is a bit unbalanced but quite tasty. Too many bittering hops and not enough floral. I would have prefered more hop nose to balance the aftertaste, or less bittering hops to balance the sweet nose. Bit too thin for my tastes. But I do love winter beers and cherish any experience I can have with one I’ve never encountered. Its a cold weather beer, it fits the style well.
