Thereís no way itís just 6.7% ABV. I wonít believe it.
Hereís a simple rule, for Winter Warmers, Doubles, Imperials and other Strong Ales: Beer shouldnít sear your nostrils or your mouth. Whatís really at fault here are my expectations and the thought that hereís supposed to be a warming booziness. Instead for some reason itís cold. Real cold that shoots straight from the glass up the nose and doesnít improve with the first or second sip.
Toffee, pomegranate juice and rubbing alcohol mix awkwardly in a fine mahogany glaze.
Itís Chimay PremiŤre without the distribution or the flavor.

Room temp out of bottle. Bread, hay, caramel, esp the latter. Drinkable? Yes. Memorable? Meh.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: FEB 20, 2013 Letting it warm to somewhere in the 50 degree range really improved the scent and taste, where a half hour ago I had nothing positive to say. Still, itís on the mild side across the board -- caramel on the nose and the palate with a mildly spicy finish. Not bad but unremarkable.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Clear dark orange amber with good head retention and swaths of lace. The taste is caramel malt with prunes and spices giving the impression of cough medicine. Drinkable, but not much beyond a new rating opportunity.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz. Caramel, molasses and oat scent. Deep mahogany brown pour with a foamy thick head. Medium, silky feel. Toffee/caramel flavor to buttery toast with a touch of dark chocolate. Not bad at all.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle dated best before Nov. 2013.
Pours a deep clear mahogany with a small, short-lived tan head; nonetheless decent lacing was left on my snifter. Aroma is rather light and subtle but this is a flavorful ale. The nose is rather sweet with a clear note of vanilla and some fruitiness over the malts. The flavor is sweet up front, balanced in the finish, and mildly bitter in the lingering vanilla-tinted, aftertaste which suggests roasted nuts and dark bread with a trace of cinnamon. Medium-full, smooth, warming feel.
O: a well crafted winter warmer that is not overly spiced, too sweet, or boozy.

Nice holiday ale. Typical winter spices with a bit more hoppy punch. Pretty good.
