Smashed Blueberry is the newest beer in Shipyard Brewing Company’s Pugsley’s Signature Series line. This beer is a hybrid between a Porter and a Scotch Ale and has a rich mouth feel and a body of complex intensity. Upfront, there are distinct flavors of coffee and chocolate beautifully accentuated by the aroma of fresh blueberries. The finish features a delicate balance of sweet fruit and dry hops. This beer pairs well with glazed duck, ribs, barbeque, chocolate, and blueberry deserts. To fully experience all the flavors, Smashed Blueberry is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Rated from backlog. Pours dark brown with tan head. Intense big blueberry aroma. Impressive combination of blueberry and chocolate on the palate. Very nice one.

2012 (?) 22 oz bottle served in a Sweetwater Blue pint glass. Pours thick and dark with a dense, tan head that has excellent retention. A malty beer with plenty of natural blueberry aroma, more subtle bluebery flavor and a noticeable hops presence. Well balanced flavor profile: bitter-sweet, a touch of tartness. Excellent level of blueberry for this malty brew.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy amber with medium beige head that lasts awhile. The aroma is a very strong blueberry and some coffee. Medium mouthfeel with a bitter fruit flavor and light coffee in the finish. Decent.

I tend to like fruit beer but blueberries never seem to work. And they didn't here. Pours black to dark brown. Blueberries and chocolate. Mildly bitter.

Belmont bottle found hiding out in the basement. The commercial description above is absolutely, 100% accurate. Like you took a blueberry fruit beer and mixed it together with a good porter and scotch ale. Great beer.

On tap @ Tap25 in Livermore. Dark brown, light brown medium head. Smells like fresh blueberries, cocoa. Taste is dark chocolate, blueberries, roasted malt, general sweetness, bitter finish with a hint of coffee bean. Medium carbonation, very (very) smooth. The surprise of the night. No way this tastes like a 9.4%. Not a big fan of Shipyard but well done! This would be a great beer to finish off a night with...

Aroma: Blueberry, alcohol, cocoa powder, musty malts
Appearance: Opaque black with short lasting khaki head
Taste: Burst of fresh blueberry, mostly sweet
Palate: Blueberry lasts well through the finish leaving a pleasant berry aftertaste
Overall: Pleasantly surprised at how well the blueberry flavor holds up against the porter/dark malts. The berry is not subtle, but also not overbearing or artificial.

Surprisingly dark and thick. Smells like blueberry pancakes. The blueberry taste overtakes this beer as the sip fades the beer comes back in to the picture.

Bottle forms Spirits Lacey. Pours out a well carbonated black color with some hues of purple. Aroma is of intense fresh blueberries, light semi-sweet chocolate, and some mild bitterness. Taste is complex, fresh blueberries, intensity is more muted than the aroma, but still there. Some baker’s chocolate, light earthy medium roast coffee, and mild sweetness mixed with light tart blueberry and bitterness. Tasty beer.

It poured a dark brown color with a small white head. The aroma was largely of blueberries with hints of coffee and dark candy malt. The taste was interesting with some smoke, blueberries, hints of coffee, chocolate and sweet belgian malts. Tasty.
