Smashed Pumpkin is a big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg. The OG and final Alc./Vol. provide the structure and body. Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich Malts combine with the natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Willamette and Hallertau Hops to balance the sweetness of the fruit. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Smashed Pumpkin pairs well with sharp cheeses, nuts, lamb, hearty stews and desserts like flan or pumpkin pie. Chefs find this an excellent beer to cook with in dishes such as braised short ribs.

The standard of pumpkin ales in my opinion. Can’t go wrong with it. Usually the first and last pumpkin ale of the season that I see.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. A clear golden amber color with a small white head. The aroma is full of pumpkin spice and alcohol. The flavor mirrors the aroma. Overall, an outstanding pumpkin ale.

9% ?!?! Duuuuuu never new that before I cracked this big bottle open. FUCK YOU LIVER I’M DRINKING!! Smell is good, and it gooder then most of the style. Taste is the goodest. Each sip keeps getting goodier then the last. Noticeable light fall spice, maybe a lemony hops, good bitter finish. Where is the 9%? Tell me!!!! Smooth and full feeling. Cream cheese?? Maybe cream cheese, yes cream cheese. I like this, it’s very pie like but in beer form.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. The aroma is sweet; a blend of butterscotch and nutmeg with light vegetal undertones that turn to caramel apple candy as it warms up. The brilliant orange, oily beer has a white, sudsy head that exhibits mild retention and leaves light lace. The taste is a medium high sweet-forward beer with medium bitter backing notes. The thick, waxy texture has a foamy carbonation. The full body is initially warm with alcohol and sweet caramel. It finishes with nutmeg and another, more bitter and waxy spice quality. There’s butterscotch in the finish too, but this fades turning towards applesauce and root vegetables. The aftertaste has a mild potency and lingering spice character with caramel, nuts, and an alcohol dryness.

Rating #1258 27.09.2014. Bottle from CBI, 9% Clear copper-amber pour, that produces a bubbly foam. Aroma is potent, lots of nutmeg, cinnamon, hint of allspice. Taste is malty, lots of sweet and grainy notes, moderate alcohol warmth. Not a big pumpkin guy, but the balance here at 9% is fantastic.

Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin has a thick, frothy, orange-tinted cream-colored head, a hazy, bubbly, orange appearance, and even some decent lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of sharp, spicy, pumpkin pulp aroma, reminiscent of Pumpkin Head, with the spiced candle aspect. Taste is of those elements, with a bit of an odd pepper note (white pepper?). Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Smashed Pumpkin finishes between wet and dry. Not too boozy in the flavor, but one will feel it (my sample is a 12-oz. bottle). RJT

Bottles at the Oktoberfest at the Galaxy. Poured into small cup. Golden light brown with small head. Aroma is pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, bread dough, and slight booze. Taste is similar with a malty backbone, pumpkin, and then spice presence. Little boozy. Medium light body. Moderate carb.
