3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
( 22oz bomber thanks to bu11zeye) Pours clear dark orange with oily bubbles on top. Nose of honey, caramel, and biscuit. Taste alcohol, bitter piney hops but well balanced. The linger isn’t as good as the taste that has more bitterness than preferred for me. Very drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A rich creamy malt bill with relaxed wooden and leafy hops. Interesting nourishing beer (Important: not a American style IIPA).
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh a few weeks after purchase directly at the brewery
The look: Clear dark golden body topped by medium off-white head
In long: Pleasant nose of leafy hops and rich caramel. The star of this IIPA is the malt bill and not the hops. A creamy texture mixing caramel, butterscotch and a bit of toffee. A decent amount of leafy and wooden hops soften the otherwise sweet body but do not bring much bitterness. Some juicy fruit notes increase drinkability. No alcohol presence. This is surprisingly smooth drinking, nothing aggressive here. With the rich malt profile, the high abv and the non-aggressive woody/leafy hops this beer tastes like some kind of cranked up English style barley wine. By far the best Shipyard beer I’ve ever had. After trying with so many different combinations Shipyard was bound to get it right one of these days. I’m a software designer, I earn my life doing just that.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 18, 2009 Straight from the 22oz. bottle: To be honest, I expected more hops. Maybe the name should only have two "X’s" at most. But to be fair, it’s a fairly good beer. A vast array of hops, faint caramel, grapefruit rind, pine tree, grass... kinda leaves my palatte with the feeling that I just bit through chalk. I like that. Drinkability: Good, not memorable. Rebuy: Yes. You just can’t pass up a 9.25% abv. imperial IPA (and the alcohol is hidden so well). #123 on 16092009, DG.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a really good beer and the best beer shipyard has made. Golden pour. white head. Lots of citrus hops, grass and caramel malt. Flavor is well balanced between floral and citrus hops and a nice juicy malt backbone too. Good stuff.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds.Poured a very appealing clear bronze colour with a medium sized creamy beige head which hung around. A lot of appeal in the aroma which had buckets of piney citric hops mixed with caramel malt. The resinous hops and caramel malts are tantalisingly prevalent in the flavour which I found myself enjoying in a very big way. The 9.2 abv barely registers on the alco-radar. Really lovely body and balance to this. Great lingering bitter finish. Top Class. I have friends in Maine I haven’t seen in 16 years.... Time for a visit methinks !

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
It poured a dark golden liquid with a small foam that left a little lacing. It had a smell of grassy hops and butter. It had a taste of butter, grassy hops with a med-high bitterness. An ok IPA, for some reason Shipyard doesnt seem to reach all the way. Something is missing.
