3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled from a 625m; bottle - Having sampled Shipyard’s strong fruit beers – (smashed blueberry and pumpkin) I was not enthusiastic about this big IPA because I found their blueberry and pumpkin ales to hide their high alcohol volume poorly – both had a strong fusel alcohol smell and were “hot” on the palate. How wrong it is to judge a whole line by a few"average beers – the best of the lot is this XXXX IPA. It’s big in flavour and alcohol but it hides the booze well with huge crystal/cara malts and lush west coast hopping. It’s HUGE! – but drinkable and neither hot from alcohol or too bitter from hop infusion. Rarely have I tasted a big IPA at 9.3%abv that hides its booze so well.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
One of the bottle available in the Shipyard IPA sampler 12 pack. Drank from the bottle. Aroma is comprised of peach, citrus, caramel malt, and bread. Taste is much the same with the addition of resin qualities. The brew starts off sweet but ends with a nice bitterness. Heavy bodied beer with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. The beer reminds me more of an English IPA then a double. Worth a try.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a hazy golden burnt orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light lacing sticking and then slowly sliding into the beer.
The smell had some burnt caramel malts with a subdued bready toffee up front. Eventually, the sweet citrus hops make their way out but it takes a while.
The taste was mainly sweet and bready with an ample amount of booze in the flavoring.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body. Sessionable? Not really but I wasn’t expecting it to be due to the fact that this is a DIPA.
Overall, decent DIPA as if it would have been done by an English brewer. Though I don’t think this is the best DIPA on the market, I look at this one as if there’s such a style as an English DIPA.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a finger of head on a clear dark straw colored body.
The aroma is floral, barnyardish and ripe grapefruit and apricot.
The taste heavy on the malt but the sweetness is contained by the lemon and pine bitterness. Good balance.
The texture is thick with moderate carbonation.
It’s a big malty IPA.
