Sample at Kurtkeller 001: Pumpkin-tastic 01 on 11/22/2013. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of chocolate, malt and vanilla. Light-bodied with flavors of sweet cocoa, vanilla and malt. The finish is sweet with a pure milk chocolate aftertaste. Decent, although I donít know what exactly qualifies it as "Belgian" unless it refers to the chocolate.

This one one of the better ones out of this yearís winter mixpack. Reminded me of last yearís Midnight Wheat. Balance could be a little better, but going in youíd expect that. Sort of a mix between a dunkel and light stout. I wouldnít go out my way for this, but is a little above average and drinkable.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilburís in a mixer sixer. Pours a deep brown appearance with a brown head. The aroma is full of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, mild dark fruit, coconut, and some sweetness. Fairly high carbonation. Kind of tastes like a milk chocolate with some orange. Lots of milk chocolate and vanilla. Not much at all on the aftertaste. Kind of strange but not hard to drink.

Bottle from Shock Top Winter variety pack. Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head that quickly fades into a thin layer. No lacing to be had along the glass. Aroma has some roasted chocolate notes with a good bit of cocoa powder. Flavor is slightly sweet, but not as sweet as I expected. The semi-artificial taste reminds me a bit of chocolate Tootsie Pops.

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY ---Opaque very dark brown, full beige head, lace that slides back into the drink. Taste is malt that has strong overtones of dark chocolate and vanilla. Because the sweet doesnít overwhelm, this actually works as a novelty (and only one-at-a-time) brew. Very light bittering is all that is needed at the end.

355ml twist off. Brown pour, artificial flavor of cocoa puffs, tastes like chocolate soda.

I picked up a can of Shock Top Shockolate Wheat on a whim since it was only a buck. I didnít expect it to be that good, not just because of the brand but because itís six months old and low in alcohol. How well could it have held up? Well, Iím pleasantly delighted by the quality of this beer considering everything it had going against it. Dare say Iíd actually recommend it.

I poured a 16oz can into a weizen glass. It was canned on 10/10/14 and cost $1 ($0.06 per ounce).

Appearance: Opaque black in color, some carbonation is visible as itís poured. A light brown, talk, foamy head at first but it mostly dissipates and leaves no real lacing.

Smell: Surprisingly potent aroma of chocolate and vanilla.

Taste: The description of this beer is quite interesting as it claims to be ďBelgian style wheatĒ aged on cocoa and vanilla beans. It really doesnít have any Belgian character to it at all, though. Perhaps ďBelgian styleĒ refers to the recipe but not the yeast strain Ė there are no esters here at all. This is much closer to a traditional porter with the addition of chocolate and vanilla. The wheat doesnít do much for the palette or mouthfeel except to add some dryness on the finish. Iíd assume the use of wheat in the grain bill is fairly low since it doesnít do much for head retention, either. Still, the chocolate taste is pretty authentic and itís sweet but not cloying. I get a bit of a cola flavor on the back end as well. Not a very complex brew, but a surprisingly tasty one.

Drinkability: Say what you want about the Shock Top line, but damn if they arenít quaffable brews. This no exception as the mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, but without the viciousness of a stout or porter. Smooth going down with a nearly clean aftertaste. Itís amazing that at only 4.3% ABV Shockolate Wheat was able to stay fresh for so long. This is a great introductory chocolate beer for its target audience.

Pours very dark brown with some orange highlights in the light. Fizzy, disappearing tan head. The aroma is very sweet and full with vanilla. Minor notes of chocolate and toast. The flavor has more massive vanilla sweetness, cola, cocoa and hints of roasted malt in the finish. The flavors are pretty nice, but itís pretty cloyingly sweet. Canít really give it a pass on that especially since it has such a thin body. Not really bad though.

Bottle shared by a friend. Clear brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, roast and slight banana. Chocolate and malt flavor with creamy wheat and caramel accents before a sweet finish.
