Bottle shared at the Horal Chugging Tasting - CBC Clerkenwell. Thanks to Tim for the trade. Pours deep brown with a frothy, beige head. Rich cocoa aroma, some earth. Medium sweet flavor with balanced earthy bitterness, pleasant roasted malts, chocolate. Great balance. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with nice chocolate notes, baking cocoa, earth. Really nicely balanced overall.

Bottle, thanks to Leighton at the Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting. It pours near black with a decent tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, earth, caramel, toffee, dark fruit and vanilla. The taste is roasty, toast, charcoal, coffee, decent bitterness, pepper, spice and tangy dark fruit. Full body and fine carbonation. Good effort. Rather tasty!

Craft Clerkenwell, Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting, big thanks to Leighton for sourcing this Japanese rarity, 17/09/13. ’Tap your potential 1996 premium’ noted from label. Pitch black with a good sized tan head that thins but stays for the show. Nose is a solid wall of roast malt, big ole blast, earthy notes, lightly burnt cocoa, dark fruits. Taste comprises roast malt, earthy, hoppy backnotes, tangy dark fruit, light yeast esters, cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry and roasty in the finale. Nice work!

Craft Clerkenwell. Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting! Thanks to Leighton for this Japanese rarity! Opaque dark brown beer with a tidy tan head. Smooth palate, slightly soft. Rich dark malts, but not heavy. There is roast and a little coffee and dark malt cream. A light touch of tangy dark fruits. Smooth finish. Nice.

Aroma: licorice, dark chocolate, understated coffee notes Flavor: starts with licorice, dark chocolate turns to bitter chocolate, grain, light coffee on the finish. Comment: good foam and great palate. Very rich and filling without being overly sweet. Outstanding.

Tap at Mokichi. Very dark brown colour. Big golden head creamy. Aroma is smoky roast malt bit of chocolate, bit ginger, herbal, orange peel, fruity. Taste very roasty. Dark chocolate bitterness. Full bodied. But smooth. Smoky, touch of orange. Full on booze but not overpowering, very nice.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2013 I think this is bigger than 7%. Big, muscular beer. Rich, decadent and very non summery. Esters are not really a bit part of this, but chocolate, with a good under current of roast are. Not overly sticky, more a full bodied, wholesome BIG stout. RERATE> LISTED At 8% - seems right. World class stout.

Hand pump at Fujisawa Mokichi. Black with lace and nice legs. Looks close to flat. Big chocolate, licorice, spice, coffee. Some phenols, strawberry. Big dark chocolate flavors, spicy, with some roasted wood and nice fruit. A bit roasty, but not as much as the keg version at Hopman, which was too burnt and not Belgian enough. Same day. Licorice and Belgian yeast character coming out nicely here. A bit of cherry. Good stuff.

On tap at Kamikaze. Nothing Belgian about this, but it’s a very solid imperial stout, especially for Japan. Probably the best Japanese imperial stout I’ve had. deep black with thin head, aroma doesn’t jump out at you but typical coffee and dark chocolate. Big sweet and bitter punch, then rounding out through the malt with a great long bitter finish. Smooth mouth feel. Nothing mind blowing, but a very solid beer, which is a pretty big deal for this style made in Japan.

On handpump at Mokichi. I asked for the ABV and no one seemed to know, so I think they just guess 7%. I would say more like 8-9%, but whatever.Pitch black color with nice dark brown head. The nose explodes with malty goodness, hops and a touch of esters. Cherries, bready, earthy, pie crust. Smooth, alcohol well hidden, rich but never cloying. Very full bodied.Cherries and wooden finish. So rounded and smooth. Wow. Excellent. Tons of depth and very well made - again, these guys are really becoming one of the best breweries in Japan. This is one of the best Japanese craft beers I’ve ever tasted.
