COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Freedom of ’78 is a medium bodied IPA with a wonderful, bright clarity and pleasing bronze hue. The aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit and subtle pine qualities. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss, and attributes of tangerine, nectarine, and even faint honey flavors are detectable. The finish quickly turns to an expected IPA bitterness that turns dry during prolonged tastings

Bottle:   Hazy golden, a little dirty and hazy, large frothy white head, sticky lacing.   Huge Guava aroma... dominates would be the right word.   Soft sweet hoppiness up front, also some minor immature Guava.   Not as sweet as I thought it would be, but then again that may be the hops.   Smells and tastes real, nothing artificial about this one.   Unique for sure!   Very smooth, some sweetness of the Guava that does balance well with the hop bitterness.   Yes, very well balanced.   This one is interesting, fruity with the Guava but also hoppy.   The more I drink this the more it grows on me.   Not overly sweet, yet not overly hoppy, with a nice immature Guava aroma and flavor.   This one really worked for me.   Thanks Kevin for this one!

bottle courtesy of flandersned, thanks for this chance to try this one! pours a crisp yellow with a medium white head that disappears fast but comes back with just a tiny swirl. the aroma is nice, some bright and bitter hops, just slightly soapy and astringent, and the guava adds a veny nice level of complexity to the aroma, very sweet and candy like, didn’t think it would show up this strongly on the nose, but it works well. the taste is to match. i was expecting crap from this one, but its actually very well done. its very unique, and changes a lot throughout the palate. sweet and candy like up front, then a good bitter kick from the hops in the middle and back, and fading into a sweet and balanced malty aftertaste. this one is interesting, a lil on the sweet side, but not totally overdone. the guava is done very nicely and the beer has a balanced profile of hops, guava and malt.

Gold pour. Light head. Dirty hops, guava, maryjane aroma. Flavor is earthy, muddled hops, citrus, guava and reefer. Odd but good.

Bottle from Styles. Fresh grapefruit, citrus, and orange peel aroma. Toasted malt emerges but it’s mostly citrusy and a bit herbal. The color is a darker shade of gold. This pours out with a good thick head and a thin foam settles on top for good. The flavor is certainly tropical fruity. Again, grapefruit and orange peel come to mind but it definitely tastes like guava too. The tropical fruit sweetness is countered by crisp hop bitterness and a bit of toasted almond. Sweet caramel lends support but it’s burried underneath the hops. My kind of IPA. Very good stuff. Thanks Chris!

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a slight orange hue with a white head that lasts throughout the beer and laced slightly. Aroma has a strong note of pine with a bit of underlying light fruit and a grapefruit note. Flavor started with a strong pine note and was joined by some sweet fruit, guava and grapefruit coming out in the finish.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2011 12oz bottle. thanks to derek for the hookup!...pours a mostly translucent orange apple cider brown with a moderate, but quickly fading, frothy white head... juicy guava and citrus hop dominated aroma with a delayed pine essence that ultimately surface ... flavors are fruity in nature, as described in the aroma, with an apparent pine bitterness hitting stride mid-palate and lasting on through the finish. i could swear that some rosemary or sage makes its way into the equation but perhaps that’s just the herbal hops in combination with the bitterness(thanks to honkeybra and nickd who also noted this similarity). i dunno. nice body with crisp active carbonation. i recall enjoying half acre’s version just a touch better.

From the bottle. poured a nice hazy amber orange, with a nice big khaki head that left some nice lacing. Aroma sweet citrus pine, sweet grapefruit tropical fruits, flavor the same. I like shorts beer but this one made me a bigger fan. This was a WOW beer for me

12 oz bottle gifted by Mr. Derek. Thanks! Pours glowing fiery orange copper, a touch of haze, quite fiery, a big frothy khaki beige head sits atop, stays large and laces well. Aromas are fresh guava and citrusy grapefruit, florals. Grass and lemon, some biscuity and pale malts, touches of richer toffee. Guava is lively, strong, a fruity melange. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, cool with lively fruit. Guava is big, tart with citrusy and bitter hops, grapefruit, lemons, grass, florals, touches of gumball, pale malts, bread, grains. Guava is a great touch, this version seems a bit gentler than the Half Acre one, not as furious, but also more quaffable. Lively tart and fruity guava wins me over. I really hope they do this bad boy again on either end of the lake. Light, flavorful, complex with great drinkability. Tastes pretty similar, but wins a point because of how much I missed it.
