Freedom of ’78 is a medium bodied IPA with a wonderful, bright clarity and pleasing bronze hue. The aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit and subtle pine qualities. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss, and attributes of tangerine, nectarine, and even faint honey flavors are detectable. The finish quickly turns to an expected IPA bitterness that turns dry during prolonged tastings

Bottle. Pours a light gold color, slight haze, lasting head. Aromas of citrus, a light sweetness of tropical fruit. Taste is guava up front, some citrus fruit; medium sweet, but slowly a light bitterness takes over. Maybe a bit heavy on the guava for my tastes, but this is a great IPA.

Damn! This collaboration beer is good, has some new flavor kicked in with guava and tangerine, still stays true to ipa, will have again

Bottle. Pours a light gold with medium head. Aroma is a light fruit, citrus, grapefruit. Taste is slighlty sweet with that guava coming thru. Medium body, slightly bitter finish. Interesting flavors here.

Pour is cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma and flavor of sweet fruit, earth, floral, and agave. Finish is sweet and slightly bitter. Good.

Bottle: Gradient of light-amber & deep-gold, highly translucent with lots of clarity; creamy layer of white foam leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is a lovely tropical & hoppy combo. Huge bouts of guava nectar & guava juice colling with wild, wet, & weedy hops. Light grass & pine essence with the guava giving off a generic tropical vibe (you can pull mango & tangerine from this as well), Tertiary biscuit malt. Taste is juicy guava, tropical nectar, grassy hops, light pine, & a touch of perfume. Mix of hoppy bitterness & juicy fruit sweetness. Slick mouth feel. A wonderful guava injected IPA, one of those beers that really hits the spot in the summertime.

Bottled on date is scratched away but this was bottled no more than three weeks ago, I know, so I’m not concerned about that. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Priced at Short’s usual $2 for a single bottle. Appearance: Reasonably hazy, and even more hazy if you get all the goodness from the bottom of the bottle into the glass. About a finger of a soapy head that dies down pretty quickly. A bit of patchy lacing. It looks alright. I tend to nit-pick -- I much prefer the look of a creamier head over a soapy one. Minor annoyance. The bottle itself looks quite a bit different from Short’s other stylings, but it still stands out a bit, despite it being a mostly dark logo. Maybe the art was done by somebody over at Half Acre for this one? In any event, pretty decent looking all-around. Smell: Yeah, guava. Smells really tropical as you’d expect. Guava/mango/peach aroma more so than a kind of pineapple. Not much else to mention as it really just smells tropical. I don’t get earthiness or really any malt in the aroma. Taste/feel: Mild/moderate carbonation with actually an unexpectedly quite thin mouthfeel.. that’s the first thing I notice, and that’s my biggest knock on Freedom of ’78. The flavor follows up what was on the nose, with loads of guava and mango with only a slight bit of pine on the finish. Finishes pretty dry as well. Not nearly as bitter as many Short’s IPAs seem to be either, which is a good change of pace. Freedom of ’78 is a good beer. It’s relatively one-note with a guava/mango sort of flavor and aroma going on with only the slightest pine aftertaste, but it works. It’s way too drinkable. It drinks like it’d be about 5% rather than 7%. Again, low sort of carbonation, but my only real problem with this beer is its mouthfeel... it could use a bit more heft. Regardless, this is a delicious IPA.

On tap at Dan's. The pour is a foggy golden coppery color with a decent white head and a bit of good lacing on the glass. The aroma is humongous on citrus with a little lighter hop presence taking the back seat. There is a nice pine presence on the back end, and it smells like a solid IPA. The flavor starts out with the same citrusy dominance. The hoppiness comes through in good force, somewhat drowning out the resin character. There is a good bitterness on the back end. The mouth feel is decent. There is solid carbonation, albeit a little light, and the aftertaste is lingering and bitterly citrusy. Pretty good ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from trade. Pours clear gold with tall white head. Aroma of pine and citrus - lemon pushes through the most. Crisp and clean taste...more resin/bitter/pine notes than sweetness, though the malt is well balanced. Some lingering bitterness on the tongue but nothing like a Stone hopbomb. Quite good.
