Bottled on date is scratched away but this was bottled no more than three weeks ago, I know, so I’m not concerned about that. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Priced at Short’s usual $2 for a single bottle. Appearance: Reasonably hazy, and even more hazy if you get all the goodness from the bottom of the bottle into the glass. About a finger of a soapy head that dies down pretty quickly. A bit of patchy lacing. It looks alright. I tend to nit-pick -- I much prefer the look of a creamier head over a soapy one. Minor annoyance. The bottle itself looks quite a bit different from Short’s other stylings, but it still stands out a bit, despite it being a mostly dark logo. Maybe the art was done by somebody over at Half Acre for this one? In any event, pretty decent looking all-around. Smell: Yeah, guava. Smells really tropical as you’d expect. Guava/mango/peach aroma more so than a kind of pineapple. Not much else to mention as it really just smells tropical. I don’t get earthiness or really any malt in the aroma. Taste/feel: Mild/moderate carbonation with actually an unexpectedly quite thin mouthfeel.. that’s the first thing I notice, and that’s my biggest knock on Freedom of ’78. The flavor follows up what was on the nose, with loads of guava and mango with only a slight bit of pine on the finish. Finishes pretty dry as well. Not nearly as bitter as many Short’s IPAs seem to be either, which is a good change of pace. Freedom of ’78 is a good beer. It’s relatively one-note with a guava/mango sort of flavor and aroma going on with only the slightest pine aftertaste, but it works. It’s way too drinkable. It drinks like it’d be about 5% rather than 7%. Again, low sort of carbonation, but my only real problem with this beer is its mouthfeel... it could use a bit more heft. Regardless, this is a delicious IPA.

On tap at Dan's. The pour is a foggy golden coppery color with a decent white head and a bit of good lacing on the glass. The aroma is humongous on citrus with a little lighter hop presence taking the back seat. There is a nice pine presence on the back end, and it smells like a solid IPA. The flavor starts out with the same citrusy dominance. The hoppiness comes through in good force, somewhat drowning out the resin character. There is a good bitterness on the back end. The mouth feel is decent. There is solid carbonation, albeit a little light, and the aftertaste is lingering and bitterly citrusy. Pretty good ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from trade. Pours clear gold with tall white head. Aroma of pine and citrus - lemon pushes through the most. Crisp and clean taste...more resin/bitter/pine notes than sweetness, though the malt is well balanced. Some lingering bitterness on the tongue but nothing like a Stone hopbomb. Quite good.

Citrus hops, lemon zest and guava blend together perfectly. Undertones of caramel, peppercorn and just enough wheat for a fresh finish. Lives up to the hype.

Pours a bright orange with amber hues. A small white head that stays as a ring the whole way down with spotty lacing. Aromas of tropical fruits (guava!), other citrus fruits (lemon zest), some pine, rosemary and faint malts. Taste is very juicy. Lots of tropical hop flavors coming across a medium body of sweet malts. Very nice finish balanced with hop bitterness (slightly astringent/soapy) and the the guava/malt sweetness to round it out.

Bottle... Pours clear and amber with a small, creamy, white head. Great retention. The bouquet presents a truckload of citrusy hops blended with a tropical fruit and gourd medley - pumpkin and guava standout. Full-bodied with light, airy carbonation. The flavor is of medium-bitter citrusy hops with moderate acidity that is obviously fruit and/or hop-related and not a sign of infection. Solid malts, but they don’t contribute to the nose or flavor - only the body. Moderately astringent, mildly tart, lightly bitter finish that dries out nicely in the end. Bottle courtesy of FlandersNed!

12oz bottle-thanks to jtclockwork for sharing–pours a dissipating off white head with trailing lace and gold/amber color. Aroma is guava, pine needle/rye, tropical fruit-pineapple/lemon zest, some light/medium malt. Taste is grapefruit rind/pine/guava, secondary light/medium malt. Good effervescence. Taste different from nose.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2014 The first time I had this one I loved it. I only had one bottle though. I had to wait a year for it to come out again and I instantly bought a case. I still really like it but not as much as I built it up in my head. Still a great beer and one of my favorites by the brewery. The guava is all over this thing. A big hop and tropical aroma. Just the right amount of carbonation. The tropical fruit comes out first in the taste and fades only slightly as it goes down. The hop bitterness meets in a running change and lingers on the tongue well after the sip with a very dry finish. A very drinkable beer. Definitely glad I got a case. Just another example of Shorts strutting their hop muscle.
